The CIA now believes the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic most likely originated from a laboratory, according to an assessment that points the finger at China even while acknowledging that the spy agency has “low confidence” in its own conclusion.

The finding is not the result of any new intelligence, and the report released Saturday was completed at the behest of the Biden administration and former CIA Director William Burns. It was declassified and released Saturday on the orders of President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the agency, John Ratcliffe, who was sworn in Thursday as director.

Earlier reports on the origins of COVID-19 have split over whether the coronavirus emerged from a Chinese lab, potentially by mistake, or whether it arose naturally. The new assessment is not likely to settle the debate. In fact, intelligence officials say it may never be resolved, due to a lack of cooperation from Chinese authorities

Why would this information be classified?

I think we can all agree that maximum transparency on COVID origins is good thing.

The conclusions may not be classified but the information gathered to reach those conclusions could reveal clsssified information

they don't have any alternate assessment, but they have low confidence in this one largely as a result of a lack of Chinese transparency.

Lab origin is a sad misdirect. Whether nature or lab there was never anything to turn the world upside down for. But lab origin is just another means of distracting attention from that dark time in history that the human race went mad.

I am not sure why this is such a big issue for the right wing nuttery machine.

Whether it was a sick person from a pig/bat origin or a sick person from a lab leak makes zero difference to 2M dead Americans nor the argument as to what was the right level of response to it.

My assessment is that it makes Trump and the Trumpsters even more pathetic for downplaying this Chinese attack on America and the rest of the world ... but I have low confidence in this assessment.

LOl, Chinese attack. Like China bio-engineered a weapon so deadly it was said to have preyed on octogenarians with four comorbidities.

How many Americans should China be allowed to kill* for Trump and the Trumpsters to care? If 2 million isn't enough, give me a number?

    *With low confidence

With something like this, the answer is usually to protect the source of information. Sometimes, the information itself is not particularly earthshaking, but it could only have come from a few places, and its revelation also helps (in this case) China to figure out how the U.S. learned what it did.

No basis for your belief that China attacked us with a bioweapon.

I gave you the number Covid killed in my post #8.

This is a thread about covid being assessed as a Chinese lab leak. Probably true they didn't attack the world on purpose. Still, Trump pretending it wasn't happening, and Trumpsters still continuing to downplay it, is pathetic. There should be consequences. 2 Million Americans dead.

There is no basis for believing that any Americans died from a fictitious pathogen.

That said, I grant the vast majority believed it, certainly the Democrats who charged Trump with overreacting before they charged him with under reacting.

In the final analysis it was a bipartisan moral panic.

Yes, transparency is a good thing, but the CIA and transparency are a contradiction in terms. At the CIA secrecy is a way of life. On the subject of 9/11, for example, the CIA wouldn't even share its information with the FBI. And vice versa.
