Its way past time. They abdicated their duty to provide a level playing field years ago and at this point have become completely and totally useless.
Except NIL is currently out of the colleges umbrella and in a private collective. Title 9 won't apply to that just like it doesn't apply to private businesses.
Ironically, if football and basketball break away to form separate entities, and private / not part of the university, we will likely see a decrease in women's scholarships. Right now, Title 9 requires a one for one scholarship for men and women. Take away 100 men scholarships and the universities could take away 100 women's scholarships unless that women's sport created enough revenue to take care of it.
They’re trying to finagle some control over the third party deals as part of the settlement with the current lawsuit. They want the authority to approve and disapprove all the deals.
Plenty of colleges without football have womens sports. However thats being done, i suggest schools take notice and everyone can use that model.
Sounds like they want to be employers. Team owners have contracts but they dont tell nike how much they can pay Tiger. These colleges are the most assbackwards organizations to ever exist. I cant believe they got this far. They do have a great product though.
Negotiating all this stuff with a single athlete is unlikely to get them the results they’re seeking, imo. Almost everything they’re trying to get included in this settlement is going to be litigated again in the near future. And again and again until they figure out a way to negotiate with the group instead of individuals. Even then, they won’t/shouldn’t get to have control over the third party deals.
Currently, yes. But the NCAA schools are trying to regain control over the collectives and pay athletes directly. That will completely change the calculus of Title 9 administration.
The scholarships don’t cost the colleges much, its the room,board, facilities, and travel. I expect those latter 2 items to shrink if that comes to pass.
The schools can pay them if they want, NIL isn’t going away. It will just go back to bags. Someone will always be willing to pay the most for talent.

Reading the article, FY23-24 was a financial anomaly with 6 home games in 2023 instead of the typical 7. $29M in lost ticket revenue, royalties, licensing and sponsorship as a result of that lost game. There was also another $10M in contract buyouts. Now what happens to schools when they have to come up with the $20M+ each year to satisfy the House v NCAA settlement? They may have willingly let go of a $3M DC when you can get one for less....
