As I recall, "Chinatown" was about water hanky-panky in Los Angeles. I remember that and something happening to Jack Nicholson's nose.

    Pop-Pom Waving?

It's what sycophants do, and no movement in American (probably Western) history is more sycophantic than MAGA. In other words, virtue signaling for knuckle draggers.

Right, so they deal with extraordinary fire hazards, plus a scarcity of water. It's surrounded by desert. The Vox article is clearly an opinion piece. I found this portion to most likely be B.S.:

But what has truly been infuriating, at least in the California policy circles I run in, has been not the mistakes in the lead-up to the disaster, but the response in the aftermath. The governor and mayor have not responded by reconsidering any of California’s bad forest management policy. They don’t have a plan to secure fire insurance for homeowners in other at-risk areas, and they definitely don’t have a plan to manage the cascading problems that will be caused by the bankruptcy of the state insurance program.

Lucky you? And what about for those who will inherit the places we inhabit?

It is a correct statement, because American values are rapacious capitalism, relentless extraction, corporate greed, guiltless consumption

Sure and Vox is a pretty far left media group. the fact that they are coming out hard on the leadership in Cal tells you it must be pretty damn bad.

I know someone with a Ph.D in forestry who blamed it on environmentalists in California who thought they were protecting the environment. And no I am not going to give up their name. They did not give me permission to do that.

Sometimes people who think they have good intentions gain control of power, and they have no idea what they are doing. Brainwashed ideologues are some of the most dangerous people to society especially when they gain political power.

Did you read the Paris Climate Accord? Yeah, not what you think it is.

I would suggest your forestry nerd friend head out into the field and watch a fire get blown by 60MPH winds and then go back to his desk and devise a way to stop it. Look forward to his breakthroughs.

Liberals see a problem and reflexively respond by spending money in stupid and inefficient ways. That's why people used to call them "knee-jerk liberals."

US CO² emissions decreased 22% from 2005 to 2022. That's below the 17% Paris Climate target. How much credit should Trump get for the CO² emission decline that came from the increased use of a fossil fuel, i.e. natural gas? I'll let the Dems play with the numbers.

Long term the correct move is to keep our economies strong by avoiding dumb Democrat climate initiatives. With a strong economy a technological breakthrough that solves global warming will come more quickly. Then man can work on the coming global cooling (it's a cyclical process).

He told me this probably a year ago. That was before recent events in California. In very simple terms he explained it this way. Indians did controlled burning. That prevented forest fires. Environmentalists don't like controlled burning. They don't do that because the environmentalists have power in California. So, now they have forest fires. Climate change is a good scapegoat to transfer more power to the environmentalists. You have to be in awe of propagandists. They screw everything up with their policies, and then they find a way to spin that into a justification for why they need more power and more money. It is a scam that hopefully will be written about in the history books so future generations know not to be duped by it.

Well, given that the State of California does a fair amount of controlled burns, it would appear that perhaps your friend fell for a scam that a propagandist told him.
