Former NFL player Warren Sapp sues Okeechobee sheriff’s office for wrongful arrest

I’m not here to defend the cop. I said they were wrong. Claiming that he was truly impeding to the point of hauling him to jail was never going to fly which was why it was dropped. But she was still talking to the driver and had warned Sapp he was obstructing. Sapp was completely wrong about the definition and kept arguing with her. He was also wrong about what she put on the ticket, which wasn’t even his business to start with. As I said they should have had way more patience and there were many simpler ways to resolve it, the cops failed three or four times, but once he was told he was obstructing he should have walked away or at least shut up, or asked one of the other officers to clarify what he was doing wrong so as not to impede her. Instead he kept arguing and trying to goad her. Putting him in cuffs was I’m sure done to shut him up and not necessarily arrest him - again, terrible human interaction skills to think that’s the answer but they said he was detained not arrested, which is why I would love to know what happened after the video ended. My guess is he did something else to get under their skin and they decided to show him who was boss.

But I’ll say what I always say, heed an officers commands and fight it later in court if they are wrong. You never win on the scene, and only make things worse. And in this case, at least from what we saw, his entire argument was that she wasn’t good at math. Is that worth risking jail for once you were warned once? There’s a subset of cops, like any profession, who just aren’t great at their jobs, who don’t have deescalation skills, or worse enjoy confrontation. Fight it out later. In this case he was wrong about just about everything he said on scene. If he had time to realize that it wouldn’t have even been an argument later.
Anyway, at a minimum I hope the cops get additional training. If they got fired I wouldn’t cry over that either. Eveyone here was dumb.

She was absolutely still talking to him, but you’re right, it was the cop next to her that told him he was in danger if obstructing. Same stuff applies though. It wasn’t his fight, he was warned, and he pressed on. I will say again, I would be big money there was another argument after this. Not saying that makes it his fault, but something took it from detained to arrested.

 

In an interview, Sapp said that he was barefoot and when placed into the patrol car, he did not put his feet in the vehicle. That could be it.

 

For future refrence.. the P word (referencing an animal that goes Oink) is not allowed.

Which rule did this violate? A profession is a choice, not an immutable characteristic.

Why are cops so special? No wonder there's such a lack of accountability. They're put on a pedestal to worshiped.

 

I've had posts edited or deleted insulting the military too. We cant make fun our our brave violence workers too much.

 

What about demonstrably bad cops. Derek Chauvin, the ones that beat Rodney King to a pulp, the ones that held a woman face down in fire ant bed in purpose, the ones who enter homes illegally and brutalize innocent homeowners, etc etc etc.

Can they be referred to as the (gasp) P word.

 

Growing up in Tampa, I always heard Warren Sapp was a straight up asshole and treated people like shit. But he is 100% right here. Cop got pissed that he asked for name and badge number…. Hope he wins.

 

Yep, thought he was being obstinate again and hit him with resisting without violence probably, or just decided that was enough to merit a trip on the first charge.
Sad, any decent cop could have talked that down; it wasn't at all that serious. It’s also not even remotely a 20 million dollar mistake. But he will end up with a few hundred k probably, the dpt will promise more education, and it will all go away.

 

We should have done this when conservatives were calling teachers "groomers" around here. And there are plenty of teachers that post here.

 

Have to wait until they're issued Glocks before they are a protected class. Probably.

 

When they are exempted from anti-union legislation, then we will know teachers are troops
