With Day 1 in the books, I continue to hope that Trump becomes a great President in his second term. I’m not optimistic, but today I retain hope. And I’ve stocked up on 4 years worth of popcorn while I observe …
Conservatives on naming bases celebrating traitors and those who fought to preserve slavery; never mind many of these are barely 100 years if less: “that’s history y’all, it cannot be changed to appease the woke mob”. Conservatives on renaming a body of water that’s name predates the United States: “Day one priority baby”. Their only consistency is inconsistency.
Didn’t that also happen last time around? I vaguely remember making a “it would burst into flames if he touched it” joke, but maybe that was from something else.
Grew up in Alaska in the 70's when it was Mt. McKinley. Went camping there quite a bit so I always think of it as McKinley - just what I was used to growing up with it in my backyard.
Who doesnt get it? We all get the literal point, yet few view it that way globally. There are two American continents, but we are the only nation with it in our name. When you are speaking of a nation, we are America. Most of those countries refer to us as "Americans". It's a generic term often aimed at the U.S., and not just by us. I mean what are we supposed to call ourselves? "United Statsians" ? Having said all that. Its The Gulf of Mexico and Trump cant change the name any more than you or I can. And its a dumb...stupid...idiotic...idea.
I get it. But my son and daughter-in-law live in Alaska and while I was up there, last July, it seemed that the local spoke reverentially of “Denali.” So when in Rome …
Patently false. The abuse of "we are America/Americans" is a symptom of ignorance and exceptionalism.
If you’re a native Floridian from the west coast of Florida (ie “the gulf coast”) it is just “the gulf”. In my lifetime, I’ve never heard a native proclaim they were going fishing, swimming, clamming, etc in the “Gulf of Mexico”. Call it what you want but ….. it’s just “the gulf”. A better name would be “gulf of those damn hurricanes”! Or simply “hurricane gulf”.
Literally true. What other nation has "America" in it's name? How am I false to make that claim? You are basically calling people ignorant for a stance they arent making. The Gulf of America is a stupid idea. But referring to us as "Americans" is a global phenomenon based on our nation literally having it in the name. As for exceptionalism, is that the new negative spin buzzword for what many call patriotism? Nothing wrong with believing we are exceptional. We are. Do the Trumps of this world brand it for their own gain? Yes. Can we go so far as to alienate others? Yes. But lets not lose sight of the fact that many of us can both see the U.S. as exceptional while still valuing other great cultures. Sorry. I just hate that term being used as a negative. We are exceptional. (And other nations/peoples can be as well )
Our nation is not America. Good Lord, Tilly. Get a clue. The fact that another nation doesn't have it in its name is irrelevant. But since you went there, consider the continents & "Central America." I don't give a rip about the Gulf naming issue. Exceptionalism is nothing about spin / buzzword. And sure, there's nothing wrong with it, except when there is (i.e. ignorance from folks who don't travel abroad).
The person who precipitated this discussion (orlandogator/louisianagatormom/mountaineerpatriotgator/etc.) embodies exceptionalism. You can't deny it.
Our nation is literally America. The United States thereof. The world that you claim so many are ignorant about calls us "America" Churchill did. Zelensky does. When speaking about a NATION we are America.
That is true, but I’m sure it’s more just the proximity. I’m sure people in Malibu, CA or Palm Beach FL would typically just say I’m going out on “the ocean” or “the water” rather than declaring they were going to either the Pacific Ocean or Atlantic Ocean respectively. Hell I live on the gulf coast and I’ve heard tourists call it “the ocean”, or when people call a bay or inlet “the gulf” even though they technically aren’t.
Well..no. Because other countries aren't changing their geography books or maps regardless of what the US does. They will continue calling what it has always been called. Heck, it would even take US citizens 25 years for any change in name to stick. Haha, we have main roads around me that have been renamed but all the locals still call it by its original names some 20 years later.
Good point. Do they still call Turlington by its old name "GPA" (general purpose A building) on campus? When I was there it was Turlington but no one called it that yet. What about library East/West?
