Neither are the players that break these NIL deals at the drop of a hat... not a legal contract, I guess.

If the player can break them, then so can the NIL reps... Another reason why I do NOT like schools getting directly involved with the NIL. The SCOTUS never allowed pay-for-play.

IMO only, I think the "agent"/attorney involved -- whose name I don't even want to promote -- may have bitten off more than he can chew. Conference will be the ones to get this more under control if any group can.

Speaking of the "agent"/attorney . . . I tried to post a shining, virtuous, defender of rights and could only get . . .

There are like 2,000 athletes in the transfer portal, I’m supposed to believe none of them had contact with another school while they were still enrolled at their previous one? Lol sounds like sour grapes by Wisconsin.

Wisconsin is my 2nd team and I know a couple UW boosters. LSS, they asked Lucas if he wanted to stay or go because they had other options. They were going to sign Raion Strader from MOH, who ended up at Auburn.

So- Lucas commited to stay, UW passed on Strader then Lucas backed out. UW got burned and didn't like it.

Not a good look for UW, but understandable reaction.

I think Miami fb should get the death penalty for this act of tampering.

Receivers will soon transfer while the deep ball is still up in the air and they are full stride out the stadium instead...

Seems like the schools need to tighten up the contracts. You sign and leave you didn’t fulfill the contract terms then you owe some cash back.

Sadly enough schools won’t do this so the players can just run off to the next green patch of grass.

Schools, the NCAA, and conferences never wanted contracts. They had one year scholarships, while making billions. This s%^t show is not on the players but a function of the NCAA, as described by Brett Kavanaugh, running a business where they didn't pay their employees and claimed they could not pay employees b/c that was the basis of their business. Scotus laughed them out of the court room.

Yes, players are going to move around like college students seeking jobs/the highest payday. You think the schools can't stop this? Do they lack the will to enforce contracts? Hell no. These are money making machines. What they lack is the institutional integrity to set up a structure where players are compensated AND required to behave according to agreed upon restraints. It is a joke now not because players are moving around freely like students the NCAA has long claimed them to be, but b/c they aren't being contracted as the professionals that they are. NCAA/conferences/schools have to negotiate to tie this down... about which I have little faith.

What money to give back? The players don't get a lump sum up front. They get a monthly stipend. If the player backs out, the tap is shut off.

I have mentioned this before, I have a client directly involved with USF NIL. Most of these NIL contracts are semester based. You hear them say a one year contract or two year deal. But that is bogus. It is contingent on the player being enrolled at the school as a student (not athlete). Once they drop out or leave for whatever (transfer/graduate) reason the NIL contracts are nullified. The player gets a car as part of his NIL, then transfers, the car gets taken back and given to someone else. Most are leased. Player gets money during the season and then transfers in December, any money that he would get for Fall and Summer is voided.

At the least that is how it is done at USF. I would think that is standard around the conferences.

UW mentions the two NIL with Wisconsin Athletics. That deal would be voided if the House vs NCAA deal isn't approved in April. Do you think UW would still honor it if there was no approval of the deal?

A few thoughts about this statement:

    1. It seems the Wisconsin has jumped the gun on the contracting directly with its student-athletes. The settlement is not final and last I checked an institution paying an athlete directly is a violation of NCAA rules.
    2. The way this statement is written purposely infantilizes Xavier Lucas by referring to him with his first name rather than Mr. Lucas or Lucas in the body of the release. That is disgusting.
    3. I need some of those drugs that Wisconsin is smoking if they think the NCAA will do anything at all about this situation.
