The Athletic’s voters explain their selections
The night before Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016, I was lucky enough to be in the plaque room in Cooperstown, N.Y., standing behind Cal Ripken Jr. in line to get a drink.
I have been voting for the Hall of Fame since the 2015 election, marking Pedro Martinez and Randy Johnson on my first ballot among eight other names. Each time has been an honor. Over the years, I’ve also had countless discussions with other voters, Hall of Famers and people in the game about what makes a Hall of Famer.

    Suzuki is a no-brainer.

ARod has the stats but is tainted.

If I was on the old guy committee I would work hard for both Shoeless Joe Jackson and Pete Rose getting in. No denying how great they were on the field. Jackson didn't throw games in the 1919 World Series but he knew about it. Pete did bet on games that he was involved in as a manager but what he did on the field was amazing.

So does Andruw Jones! Most of the Athletic writers agree! Hopefully enough other voters concur!

Dale Murphy had a skill that very few batters had. Yogi had it as well. He was one of the few batters that could actually get around on a high fastball.
