Why is it an FU to the party? Obama's Cuba policy was far more liberal. If anything Biden keeping Trump's policies for so long was an FU to Obama and the work that was undone by Trump.
.....In return, Cuba announced it would release 553 prisoners....... Cheapest "ransom" payment ever. Biden got 553 prisoners released for the price of....words. Way to go Joe - winning right up until the very end!!
Like what happened with U.S. interventions in Haiti or any other number of U.S. “regime changes” we’ve gotten involved in around the world? Hell, no need to fantasize about toppling governments, we can look to actual existing U.S. territory. Why is Puerto Rico not a state? Why is it not thriving? It should also be pointed out these people you think would rebuild, already fled their county instead of defending it, and they demand irrational foreign policy in their new homeland. I’m far more cynical this “flocking to rebuild the homeland” would occur. Obviously that would depend on erecting a stable govt first, you make it sound like toppling the govt is the hard part and a new regime is the easy part, whereas reality is likely the opposite.
I don't fantasize, and Cuba is not Haiti. The Cubans in America are skilled, smart, hard-working, and very successful. You'd be hard-pressed to find a Cuban on welfare. They lived through the hard times in Cuba and left for a better life. They are also very conservative and God-fearing. These are the types of people that can rebuild a small country into the 51st state or territory or sovereign country that is our ally. As I said, it's the only country in which I would be willing to get involved worldwide. The Cubans are for it. The Cuban Americans are for it, and the Americans would be for it. The only protests would be from the Russian government. Back in June, Russian nuclear submarines were docked in Havana. Russian subs 500 miles from our coast. It's time we break up this commy partnership, liberate the Cubans, and make our country safe by doing so. It's a win-win for everyone.
If the current Cuban government ever falls, it is going to be a mess sorting out how to handle the claims on property. I know Cuban families in Florida that still have deeds to their family lands that have been in the hands of other Cubans for 65 years.
They can be found and also ones who have defrauded the USA for millions and millions in welfare. That’s not counting the billions in medicare and insurance fraud scams that were happening for years.
Completely irrational. While the semi-permanent embargo makes no sense lifting the embargo by taking Cuba off the list of state supporters of terrorism is an absurd gesture given that Trump will reverse the decision within days after he takes office. I agree with you that it can also do irreparable damage to the Democratic Party in Florida given that Florida (although possibly New Jersey) is the only state in which a single foreign policy issue is also a local issue.
Because it's a stupid and self defeating policy that only exists to serve the bruised egos of a tiny portion of the population that lives mostly in Miami? Pandering. The literal only reason the policy exists in the first place.
Also, at the end of his second term, Obama began normalization of relations, visited Cuba, and ended the wet/foot dry foot policy.
The big difference in Cuba and the rest of the countries we have tried regime change is that the Cuban people as a whole, those in Cuba and those who have made it to America, want to see the dictatorship gone. Those who work for the government do so out of fear. They are not brainwashed, they are simply stuck in a horrible situation. Like I said, weekly power outages, water shortages and rationed food is normal. They are hard working people who would thrive with a government that doesn't steal all the revenue from their people and cut ameneties because they cant "afford it". Try to think past the Castro family because if we can get them out and put in place a government that will at least treat their people like human beings, Cuba can be a great asset.
Biden kept Trump's Cuba policy and I don't think Kamala made any gesture about changing it either, and they didnt waste much time in Florida running either. The Democrats lost Miami-Dade county, but certain Democrats want to pretend its still 1990 or something. If we are talking about state-level Democrats, then they are already their own worst enemy, nothing to do with Cuba. I mean, Miami has a Republican mayor. They havent had a formally Democratic mayor since the 90s. Manny Diaz ran as an independent.
That’s my take on it too. It’s the reason we’re the only country to put them on such a list. Economic prosperity for the country would have a much better chance of causing change in the government than what we’re attempting to do.
