Revoking Authorization for the Use of Red No. 3 in Food/Ingested Drugs

The FDA is revoking the authorization for the use of FD&C Red No. 3 as a matter of law, based on the Delaney Clause of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act). The FDA is amending its color additive regulations to no longer allow for the use of FD&C Red No. 3 in food and ingested drugs in response to a 2022 color additive petition.

It makes me wonder how much Kennedy's appointment had on this decision. My understanding is that Red Dye #3 is not allowed at all in most countries in Europe. It sounds like this is a good decision.

It should be interesting to see how the incoming administration reacts to the decision of Biden's FDA given that the banning of Red No. 3 is almost certain to be challenged in court by the major food producers and the animosity of Trump and his funders to "deep state" bureaucrats or as they are also referred to "the regulatory state'. By the why I'm predicting that RFK, Jr. will be one of the few Trump nominees who will not be confirmed by the Senate. Between lobbying by the food industrial complex, the pharmaceutical industry and prolifers there is a good chance that enough Republican Senators could end up dissenting to deny him confirmation.

That will be disappointing, I don't share his previous views on vaccines. (I think he has moderated those views) But I do think there is a lot to be done to improve the safety of our food supply. Just looking at the obesity rate is enough to tell me there is a problem and I am probably in that group that needs to improve my eating habits.

As long as they don't mess with the orange and blue dyes.

Now the FDA needs to reclassify Pyridoxamine (one of the 3 natural B6 vitamins) back to vitamin status like it is in France... and several other nations.

Banning Red Dye 3 is like trying to take down the Matterhorn and displacing a rock and hoping to get to the rest later.

Think about this, red #3 was banned from cosmetics in 1990 do to high cancer risks. But it was allowed to remain as a food additive until now.

According to the article, they have until 2027 to remove it....

A list of products that use it should be put out for the public to decide if they want to stop consuming it.

FDA will likely be sued to the gills from consumers and food industry. Red 40 needs to be banned as well, its linked to IBS, autoimmune and colon cancer.

FDA moves to slash nicotine in cigarettes
The proposed rule would drastically reduce the level of nicotine allowed in combustible tobacco products, but it would not apply to vapes.

This is good news. And should have already been done. If they want to give Biden’s credit on this one. Great. They know the change is coming with Dr. Makary soon to be leading the FDA.

Agree it would be disappointing. But Dr. Marty Makary is pegged to run the FDA. An absolute HR pick!

Food labels with ingredient lists have been required by law since 1990 (and this is also under FDA purview).

So people can already easily avoid thanks to labeling standards.

Whole Foods just comprehensively bans most of that nonsense, that was always a big part of their appeal. Nothing artificial in the entire store (and I believe that still holds true after Amazon took them over). At Publix or Wal-Mart it’s mostly just common sense. I guess if some read the ingredients list on publix bakery they’d surprised at some of the junk in “fresh” bakery items. But I mean if you are buying some crazy colored cupcakes or desert it can’t be a surprise that ain’t natural….

Other than confectioners, I don’t even understand why big food uses those dyes. Kelloggs promised to remove from fruit loops, they never delivered. Why? I assume it wouid cost them $.01 more per box to use natural colors - and it’s as simple as that. But then why offer that promise at all?

I hate my teeth so I like to have a Mountain Dew a few times a month. Today happened to be that day and I had a Code Red Dew. Upon reading this news I checked the ingredients and was stunned to see it didn't have Red 3 in it.
