An irony about changing the name of the base back to Ft. Bragg is that Braxton Bragg was considered one of the least competent generals of the Confederacy. Bragg is generally considered among the worst generals of the Civil War.[1] Most of the battles he engaged in ended in defeat. Bragg was extremely unpopular with both the officers and ordinary men under his command, who criticized him for numerous perceived faults, including poor battlefield strategy, a quick temper, and overzealous discipline.[1] Bragg has a generally poor reputation with historians,[1] though some point towards the failures of Bragg's subordinates, especially Major General and former Bishop Leonidas Polk—a close ally of Davis and known enemy of Bragg—as more significant factors in the many Confederate defeats under Bragg's command. The losses suffered by Bragg's forces are cited as highly consequential to the ultimate defeat of the Confederate States of America.[1] Maybe one of the reasons why Trump has an apparent fondness for Gen. Bragg is that both Bragg and Trump have the same level of competence. Trump pledges to rename Army base after Confederate general Donald Trump says that North Carolina’s Fort Liberty would once again become Fort Bragg if he’s reelected — less than two years after the base was renamed to remove the name of a Confederate general as part of efforts to reckon with the legacy of racism.
If the Dems proffered a SecDef as unqualified as Hegseth, and with his personal history, they'd be vilified and rightfully so. A parrot could sit there all day and say "we gotta get the woke out of the military, pass me a cracker" and be as effective. How this is OK for either side is mind-numbing.
I give maga credit, after they aligned their moral compass to Trump they’re honest and stop supposedly caring about family values But seems like a stretch to go back 25+ years to compare to Clinton. Especially after the ‘Me Too’ and issues of women being SA’ed & harassed. And that recent heightened awareness is a good thing.
A native American who died over 400 years ago was slammed for comparing Hegseth to a general. Who would have thought?
To be clear the Dems at the time never defended his behavior they just thought that his lie about his relationship with Lewinsky didn't rise to the level that should have resulted in his removal from office and if "slick willy's" behavior was the serious enough to keep him out of office so was even worse behavior on the part of deranged Donnie, probably the politician that you admire the most.
I'm not all that young anymore, and I wasn't really even old enough to vote for Clinton. That was 33 years ago! I'm not sure this board even existed then either.
She was comparing Hegseth to Gen. James Mattis who was a general and was possibly the best and most qualified Sec. of Defense in recent history. Kind of illustrates the change in Donald Trump's metamorphosis from a POTUS who valued competence to a POTUS whose overwhelming primary criteria for his Cabinet nominees is absolute loyalty with an attractive television appearance being a secondary quality.
In very simple terms for a lie to constitute perjury it must be relevant and material to the subject matter of the litigation. The subject was Clinton's relationship with Paula Jones not his relationship with Monica Lewinsky.
BTW, the Obama Admin absolutely tried to sideline Mattis because they did not like him or his leadership style. He was supposed to be lined up to be the next SACEUR but the incoming Obama Admin nominated someone else. He was passed over to be Commandant of the Marine Corps for possibly our worst CMC in my career. The only reason he ended up getting CENTCOM is that there was no other general that had the stature within the DoD to be put nominally in charge of Petraeus when he took over OEF from McCrystal. Obama ended up firing Mattis from CENTCOM due to his desire to be more aggressive with Iran.
This article is a must read, just because it sheds a lot of light on precisely how vile and unqualified this guy is to be SecDef. I'm not even quoting the worst parts of the hearing. Hilarious. And sad for our country. He's like Trump-light with all the adultery, sexual assault allegations, and NDAs with women. Quite obviously, his main qualification, in Trump's eyes, will be his willingness to help Trump violate the law. Sex assault allegations? Blame “left-wing” media. Issues with drinking? Those are anonymous smears. No women in combat? That’s not what I said. Pete Hegseth used a pattern of denials, memory holes and attacking the “left-wing” media at his Tuesday confirmation hearing for Pentagon chief as he sought to counter controversial issues in his past. And that strategy may work for him — along with Donald Trump’s other troubled nominees. https://www.politico.com/news/2025/01/14/hegseth-defense-secretary-hearing-00198214
While Hegseth has rejected the idea of females serving in combat roles in past books and interviews, on Tuesday he offered a carefully worded about-face. The expected nominee said he supports women serving in the military but wants to ensure the standards are not lowered for women recruits. “Writing a book is different than being secretary of Defense,” he said. Has the deep state gotten to him before he's even confirmed!?
Another takeaway from this hearing is that any wishful thinking that Trumppublican Senators would do their jobs, and vet candidates for their qualifications, was nothing but precisely that. It's like we get to watch Trump erode the credibility of our country in real time.
