He quit on his team. He will forever be a loser for that and is why he is coaching at UNLV, not a P4 school.
Mullen looked like a genius when he had a few quarterbacks that made him look that way. There's no doubt he is a good play caller, but without the players a coach is nothing. I believe there's more than five or six coaches in college football that know how to coach a football team. They just don't have the talent.
If Dan failed at UF, Billy must really be a failure. Muschamp, Mac and Dan all performed better than Billy has this far. Zook, Pell and Hall all had better winning percentages. Billy going into season 4. Mac won 10 games and the SEC East, Champ won 11 games, Mullen won 10 and 11 games. Mullen was 34-15 at UF. Mullen had UF in the top 10 in the end of season poll in 3 of his 4 seasons. We played in two NY6 bowl game under Mullen. Almost a .700 winning percentage. Napier is 19-19. Already has 19 losses! 4th lowest winning percentage all time Florida Gators College Football History, Stats, Records | College Football at Sports-Reference.com
I don’t see the point in dwelling on Mullen. He’s gone and he aint coming back. The biggest difference I see between these two guys is Billy never quit. He’s had the entire fanbase breathing down his neck since day one. The moment Mullen faced some criticism, he folded like a cheap suit. I don’t really care who gets hired or fired, I just try to support the guy we have. Billy is our guy. When he’s not, I’ll try to look for the best in the next guy.
Mullen fans absolutely stuck on his first two seasons. Year 3 we had an incredible offense and he still lost 4 games before imploding the next year. No one is thrilled with napiers results at this point but as far as trends matter he at least has a chance to get better in year 4. Our roster is markedly better going into year 4 under Napier than year 4 under Mullen and in a college football world turned upside down with NIL and no portal restrictions objective but critical fans can admit the book on Napier should really be written after next year. Mullen confirmed what he was after year 4. A great play caller that couldn't recruit or hold his staff and players accountable.
Dan and Mac could not have pulled out of their downward spiral. Muschamp could have but he was unwilling to leave the OC to do their job. Billy has finally gotten his pieces in place. He has improved Gator Football beyond the win / loss record. I cheer for the Gators. I don't care if Joe Biden is the coach, as long as we win.
He had that success with primarily McElwains guys. Surprisingly he couldn't recruit elite QBs to save his life considering his coaching MO wrt QBs.
Definitely a better OC than Billy. They are disagreeing because they know it’s true and it makes them uncomfortable. He still deserved to be fired though.
That's not really most anyone's argument. I don't know a single person that has said Billy is a better OC than Mullen. Dan never got the memo that being a head coach was more than being an OC though....
Yes, he did he knew exactly what he needed to do. He did just enough in his mind to get a NFL gig and when he didn’t he pouted acted like he was too good to work a little harder and went home. Dan knows exactly what it was going to take. He didn’t want to do it.
