Just shy of 90 percent of public high school students graduated that year, which is a 1.7 percent overall increase compared to the previous year.

Black students saw a 2.1 percent year-over-year increase, Hispanic students saw a 2.2 percent increase and economically disadvantaged students saw graduation rates rise 2.4 percent.

DeSantis credited the success to a growing school choice population, which now includes half a million private school scholarship recipients, 400,000 charter students, and 150,000 home-schooled students.

Over the past several years Florida lawmakers have implemented universal private school scholarships, expanded the use of public charter schools and even offered scholarships to home-schooled students.

Governor Touts record Florida high school graduation rates

    Wow. Thank you Ron DeSantis!

That is impressive that Florida achieved an all-time high in public school graduation rates given that DeSantis has so strongly advocated for school choice and private education. Is it possible that the narrative that school choice and private education are harmful to public school kids is patently false?

But are the students smarter or did they lower the bar?

That is a good question. I do not know of any legislation that lowered the standards for students in the public school system, but that is also not my area of expertise.

Assuming it’s an honest accounting and not just finding ways to exclude “problem” kids from the calculation, it’s a good thing. A lower rate nowadays mostly implies truancy or dropping out and joining gangs. Even for a poor or avg student, definitely a good thing to at least clear high school.

This reflects the national rate which is also high 80%’s. Supposedly based on historical rates it was in the 50%’s at the turn of the millennium. I wouldn’t buy that the schools are that much better (testing performance suggests they are worse), but maybe we are getting better at preventing dropouts?

It's sad that that's a legitimate question. There's definitely a segment of educators who think it OK to make it look like the students are being educated.

Well if graduation rate is your only metric for education then that’s the incentive created.

    This quote is patently false
The graduation rates are lower than they were 3 and 4 years ago.
    Look it up!

If you read the article in the OP you will see that they excluded the two covid years where there was not any testing and students were passed on without the testing.

    From the article:

The ranking excludes the two school years during the peak of COVID, as testing requirements were waived and produced artificially high graduation rates.

If you’re making an assertion, you should provide a link to support that assertion.

Something is not adding up. Graduation rates are at an all-time high yet our SAT scores are one of the lowest in the country. Want your kids to score higher? Send them to Mississippi or Alabama schools

That is often a product of how many kids take the test. If just the top 10-15 percent take it, you'll have much higher scores that if 75 percent do.
But I haven't looked up the participation rates recently

The state needs to adopt the UFLab (PK Young) school techniques, low student teacher ratio, selected student body, equals 100% graduation rate.
