I was going to say "Posted for entertainment purposes only" but the fires are a tragedy. I found his post to be amusing but it's possible more of it is true than one might think at first glance.

What do you make of this?

Might as well continue with that ridiculous logic. Why bother spending any money on your own firefighters since you can always borrow firefighters from other states

Uh, that's how it works in Florida too with disasters. Why hire more first responders in your town when the whole state and national guard is available for hurricane relief duty. Shit even the power companies drag in people from other states to work. On the one hand, we should fund these things like we do the cops, but on the other hand there's no need for cops to be nearly half of most city budgets either. If we cant "defund the police" where does the money come from? Higher property taxes? A money tree?

Not much the fire chief can do without water. The questions here need to get back to the topic of where is the water. That failure does fall on the local politician’s shoulders, not the fire chief.

What amount of water can fight a fire with temps in the 70s, humidity in the 20s, and winds gusting to 80mph? And the area is a giant tinder box with dry shrubs and vegetation, with the wind speeds so high, there is no air support allowed to drop water or retardant.

Read the let Malibu burn article. Fires like this in the area aren't uncommon. And decades of suppression and building has only lead to the increase of tinder materials.

Now you are being intellectually dishonest. Your point ( that you got from your orange god) that this is the fault of LAFD budget cuts still rings hollow. It would not have made a difference. At what point did I propose not spending any money of the FD? Hint: I didn't.

As stated, it would not have mattered if they had Lake Michigan in their back yard.

Massive immigration means having more people which means having less water

A lot. That is the amount needed now. Earlier, when the fires were manageable, they would have needed less. That’s why it’s the politician’s jobs as local government to make sure they have the supply they need. The issue is not the fire itself or the weather conditions. It’s the fact that the local governments have not adequately prepared themselves to fight the inevitable. I would agree with you that at this point there’s not much anyone can do. The issue is that the firefighters did not have the resources needed at the time that they could have done something.

The fire either started in the hills above Malibu or spread to that area quickly. Once there, the fire was simply not containable given the weather/wind conditions and the amount of dry vegetation available to fuel the flames. As stated, having Lake Michigan nearby wouldn't have made a difference. Fires like this are extremely difficult to contain. And impossible to contain without air support, which wasn't possible at all yesterday until about 9:00 PM local yesterday due to high winds.

It also doesn't help that Arizona is dealing with it's own large, forest fire. The Horton Fire is ablaze north of Payson (about 90 minutes NE of Phoenix) and has been burning since before the Palisades fire. The Arizona Hot Shots are the closest out-of-state group that under different conditions, would be in LA right now helping battle that fire. But that can't happen right now.

And Western states have a standing agreement to send forest fire help. The fires today may be in LA and Northern Arizona. Later, it could be Nevada and Oregon.

This isn't a resource issue. Or a DEI issue. It's a decades of not allowing smaller fires burn, which are nature to the area issue. It's overbuilding in an area where fires are part of the natural cycle issue. It's a global climate change issue, as it's been unusually dry in the area, and Santa Ana winds usually die down by Thanksgiving; rare to have them after the new year. And it's a weather issue. Try battling a forest fire in those conditions without air support. Next time a tropical storm hit, go outside and replace the rain with fire, and you might get a hint of what it's like.

This is just one more example why Trump is an awful potus. People are losing their homes, businesses and lives he’s using the attention to blame his political opponent. And I doubt he even understands what he’s talking about. Trump always tries to divide our country.

Talk about missing the point. This budget thing you are hung up on was 2% of the budget. LA has ~3500 firefighters. With federal and out of state resources there’s now 7500 on the ground. This is not a matter of personnel, at least not that a +/- of 2% on a budget would matter one iota.

Supposedly fire hydrants are running dry in places, but not sure anything “different” happened there or it’s the extraordinary demand. But either way it’s something to look at in a place with extraordinary fire risk.
