There are firefighters there from multiple states. Your point rings hollow. Try again.

Me too, but that's because LA cut the budget of the firefighters to offset a huge increase the police budget. Something tells me a lot of conservatives and people complaining now didnt mind that when it happened lol. Sometimes the "crime is out of control/back the blue" fiction bites people in the ass, and this is what happens. Natural disasters are never a problem until they are.

According to this, the amount cut represented the 2% of the total firefighting budget and was shifted towards policing.

Did Los Angeles cut $17.6M from the LAFD fire department’s budget? | krem.com

Obviously the politicians will say what they say, but I don’t think a 2% budget cut necessarily impacts readiness. Hell those DOGE guys say they can cut crazy numbers, but when it’s politically expedient the other way a 2% cut is suddenly devastating to govt services?

There isn't a municipal fire dept in the country that could have handled what these fires are doing without outside assistance. A bigger budget for LAFD would not have made a difference.

Back when i had a job i worked a couple of wildfires - the largest in Okefenokee swamp that had little wind. A huge wildfire is a living breathing malevolent monster. It roars, it snaps and pops, trees literally explode from the heat, it creates its own wind as it sucks in air in order to breathe, shooting swirling tornadoes of flames in random directions. It is a horrible scary thing and it is hard for me to fathom the courage needed to step into such a thing being aided by 80mph winds.

More resources wouldnt have hurt, but there is really nothing you can do about dry land, high winds blown through canyons, etc. This is not unlike Florida with hurricanes and coastal areas. People are living in places where we arent meant to live without things like this happening. Overdevelopment and climate change can only make it worse. Most of the money we spend will be toward mitigation and subsidizing the costs of the wreckage and rebuilding (bailing out insurance companies, homeowners etc). We will blame all the wrong things because we arent prepared to do the things we must (like essentially end capitalism as we know it).

Ridiculous. Lakes do not prevent forest fires. Many ecosystems, including the chaparral of CA, the scrub of FL are fire climax systems that depend on fire as a natural and frequent occurrence to properly function. Its just that we humans have built our communities in them and then when the inevitable happens we hop and down and point fingers at one another.

I'm not endorsing this conspiracy theory AT ALL but some of the facts in it are correct at a minimum. James Woods (the actor) said yesterday that many of his neighbors in his Pacific Palisades community had their homeowners insurance canceled 4 months ago. Crazy theory:

More stupidity. You don’t endorse the conspiracy but you promulgate it. If you don’t endorse it, then don’t spread it.

Same argument that comes up when hurricanes wipe out a coastal community.

In addition to that if anyone objects to proposed development in risky areas, the righties have a coniption fit. No area is without risk, some are riskier than others though.

Orange County was very Republican until quite recently, and I dont think voting blue has changed their views on things like that, especially the rich people who want their hilltop mansions. Didnt Reagan live in Pacific Palisades at one time?

Every day that passes reminds me that Trump, Musk, their cronies, and most of their voters simply want to see pain and suffering on people they perceive as “not American enough.” Meaning: don’t support the Idiocracy that is MAGA.

California’s worsening water situation has a component related to usage of resources in the state and depleting watersheds for desert cities like Las Vegas. However, drought, driven largely by climate change, is the primary culprit. Even then, Santa Ana winds this strong make it impossible to fight these things. Anyone who has lived through a strong Cat 1 (or more intense) hurricane knows the sheer force of those winds. Now add fire.

If the MAGA party was serious about stopping this, they’d stop trying to push for additional development that would make water resources even more scarce, but they won’t. That development lines their pockets, the world be damned.

CA invested billions in forest management and firefighting resources. This event is just simply too significant for any imaginable response to handle.

I’m looking forward to our illustrious MAGA mod and his gang of MAGA narcissists justifying and celebrating Trump’s craven cruelty when he cuts off disaster aid to hurt a state that didn’t vote for him.
