Unfortunately they are probably used for the dumbest things imaginable, like mining bitcoin or generating AI slop

Seymour Cray's former bodyguard used to drive a taxi in Panama City Beach. He said thlhe Euro weather people used a Cray supercomputer which made their weather forecasts better than ours. When I see those spaghetti hurricane models I try to identify which one is the Euro model. Usually not easy to do. I think the Euro model did the best job of forecasting hurricane Charlie 20 years ago. Hopefully NOAA now has the fastest computer.
UF’s supercomputer, Hipergator, which is a joint project with NVDIA, is 62nd in the world. When it was first brought online it was 21st. TOP500 List - June 2024 | TOP500 but UF just authorized an upgrade which should move us substantially back up that list. We are getting technology that isn’t even on the market yet.
