The Koch brothers were the bogymen of the left although like Musk they became politically active to support their financial interests. The Kochs made their fortune in fossil fuels, chemicals and extractive industries and environmental legislation and regulations were costing them big bucks. They became involved in politics to support candidates who in turn supported their freedom to pollute.

So to be clear, Soros is just a humanitarian and acting in good faith, while the Koch were bad actors just acting in their own financial best interests?

Or could it be that they all have their own core beliefs about the best way for society and government to function and they choose to support candidates that agree with them?

The Koch brothers have their core beliefs. They became libertarians because environmental laws and regulations were costing them big bucks, clean air and clean water be damned.

The Koch’s in the past campaigned to abolish social security, the minimum wage, environmental laws, rules on political contributions, etc. Think about that. These are not two sides of the same coin or questions about how society should operate. The Koch’s believed they were in a separate industrial class of people and should be able to dump their waste on the rest of society with NO cost to them. Not even “privatize the profits, make public the costs” as pro-business Republicans tend to do, they would deprive the public of even meeting those environmental cleanup costs by depriving govt of the agency and resources. How do you think that works?

They were extremist so-called libertarians and the world will undoubtedly be better off when they pass (fortunately one of the brothers already did).

I’ve never understood the vitriol the right wing has for Soros (obviously he is a big giver to various “left wing” causes and i guess his background makes him ripe for anti-Semitic tropes). I’m not aware of a particular extreme position Soros has taken, whereas my issue with the Koch’s was always their extremist takes on the environment and political contributions. Corrupt scum.

agree. HRC or Rush its disappointing it’s so political or about friends of the potus. It could be a meaningful award. Instead I barely pay attention.
Unlike the CM of H which is still very meaningful.

The level of obsession is extremely different. I’m certainly the number of times CNN mentioned Koch in a headline is a tiny fraction of Fox and Soros.

I think I properly understood what it was when Bush gave it to his own CIA director post-WMD farce.

A fun fact while I learned digging around: One reason Biden couldnt troll even more and give Anthony Fauci the medal is because George W. Bush already did.

Go back to the Obama Admin and I'm not sure that was true. Today's version is Musk.

Except as it involves Scott Bessent, the nominee for Secretary of Treasury. He joined Soros Fund Management in 1991, was heavily involved in their most controversial trades of the 90s, left in 2000 to form his own fund with Soros being the largest funder, had the fund fail, came back to Soros Fund Management to be Chief Investment Officer from 2011-2015, before leaving to form his own fund, again, with Soros being the primary funder of the fund initially, but which has also shrunk considerably after Soros Fund Management got their money back this time before the fund started to crash.

Mentioning this set of facts are likely to cause complex emotions in their viewers, so Fox seems to have ignored all of this.

Elon Musk isn't Jewish, so it doesn't hit the Protocols of Zion vibes with the chuds. White, nominally Christian people are allowed to dominate the world as part of a vast international conspiracy, that's just their natural entitlement.

The lobbying and campaign contributions by the Kochs speaks for itself.
The Koch family has funneled hundreds of millions into libertarian think tanks and advocacy groups pushing for deregulation — creating a web of political influence some call the “Kochtopus”. According to Robert Maguire, research director at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, lobbying against climate change-focused policy solutions has been the Kochs’ “bread and butter.”

“[The Koch network] is aimed in a lot of ways at reducing regulations of pollutants,” Maguire told OpenSecrets. “Of course this is framed as a push for small government. It just so happens that it is a push for small government that benefits Koch Industries considerably.”

Greenpeace reported that Koch family foundations spent more than $145 million between 1997 and 2018 financing groups that seek to minimize policy changes to address climate change, such as clean energy alternatives to fossil fuels.

The involvement of Koch-tied groups in West Virginia v. EPA helps protect its financial interests in the oil industry, according to Maurice Cunningham, a University of Massachusetts Boston professor and author of Dark Money and the Politics of School Privatization.

I'm sorry but using CREW and Greenpeace as sources about the Koch core beliefs and why they became Libertarians is not realistic. I'm sure you would not take any article on The Federalist or Just the News about Soros' motivations seriously.

The overall point I am trying to make is that it is a little hard to swallow the argument "Our billionaires are acting out of a good for humanity but our opponent's billionaires are only acting out of self interest and are therefore evil."

I can't speak accurately about how many headlines there were 10 years ago, but I sure don't remember CNN headlines tying Koch to every person one of his organizations gave any money to. No CNN-Koch versions of Fox's continual
California's Soros-backed progressive experiment collapses after a decade

As far as Musk, that's a little different. He's being put into power by the president-elect.

I hate when people do this, but its really impossible to imagine the right-wing reaction to "Kamala put Soros in charge of GOTV and he's also paying people to register to vote and sign a pledge to vote and now he's a special czar in charge of the looking at the budget."

I remember NPR, MSNBC, etc covering the Koch's all the time after 2010 as they were seen as the many funders to the opposition of Obama.
