Shamsud Din Jabbar is his name and he had an ISIS flag https://www.nola.com/news/crime_police/live-update-new-orleans-attack/article_dc15c750-c855-11ef-8f68-93e4d0b4450e.html
You write on the original post that he got out and shot at crowds and officers. I have not seen anywhere it said he was shooting at the crowd. Everything I read said he got into a fire fight with the police and they killed him. Nothing about him shooting into the crowds or even getting out of his truck. " The Mowrers said the victims they saw had injuries from the truck impact, and they did not see any apparent gunshot wounds. They said they left the area once emergency responders started arriving."
I heard from a neighbor whose daughter is at UGa that a Phi Mu was shot and is in critical condition. Have no idea if it’s corroborated.
On the news report they now believe he was shooting into the crowd as he drove. Earlier today they absolutely said he got out of his vehicle and shot into the crowd before engaging police. Now. That was early this morning so the story might have changed but it was definitely stated on the tv broadcast.
Yes, that appears to be what happened. The initial report was that he got out of the truck to fire. That appears inaccurate and that he instead shot from the truck.

He was a resident of Houston which means it's reasonable to infer he was most likely a legal immigrant or an American citizen. Even if that turns out to be the case I'm willing to wager that there will more stories in the right-wing media suggesting that he entered the country illegally at the Southern border. Although obviously speculation especially since very little has been released to the public regarding his background my guess is that his profile is probably analogous to the couple responsible for terrorist attack in San Bernardino in December 2015 i.e. he was a lone wolf with radical Islamist sympathies. Houston man suspect in deadly New Orleans truck attack called ‘act of terrorism’ 2015 San Bernardino attack
It appears that he was a US citizen born and raised in Beaumont, TX. Joined the military out of school (went to Georgia State, apparently). Had something to do with real estate around Houston. And Trump and MTG have already falsely stated that he was an immigrant.
I was going by what I have read and the links posted here and none of them said he was shooting into the crowd or that the people killed or hurt were shot. Now that may be the case but I have not seen it reported by any major news source. That was the reason for my questioning the statement the original post has.
It is interesting watching the presser. Pontificating politicians vs clueless questions. The focusing on bollards is fascinating. Like there aren’t myriads of side streets and secondary roads. As the area expands, so does the problem. And at some point, services need access. Sidewalk bollards up next. Can’t believe they don’t have all the answers yet. Lol
