As for the drugs Semaglutide affects 1 pathway of GLP-1 Tirzepatide affects 2 pathways and has shown better results. As gatorpa mentioned, there is a drug in trial now, retatrutide, that affects 3 pathways and is showing even stronger outcomes. Also there is a muscle sparring drug in trial that has promise.
Does the US actually subsidize the rest of the worlds pharmaceutical drugs, or do we just way overpay in comparison? You’d think this would be a rallying cry for a populist.
Yes most drugs approved received government funding for research. Pharma then charges the fed and insurance companies the most in the world because they can. Bernie has been harping on this for years at this point. It was a rallying cry but Bernie was labeled a socialist. As of today don't expect anything to happen because Americans are afraid of changing their healthcare and the billionaires are good at getting the peons to fight about transgenders and H1B as a distraction
That wasn't my suggestion. My apologies if I wasn't clear. I didn't realize they were allowed to now, but apparently they are. For a while, it seemed like they danced around it in the commercials, but I guess it's full steam ahead now.
Fasting and autophagy. Calorie deficit weight loss does not require a GLP1. Unfortunately, there is no money for doctors and big-pharma in people choosing a diet that utilize fat stores and insulin resistance resets.
If your doctor prescribed a strategy which he/she claimed would forestall the diseases of aging, but the success rate was on the order of 5% … that the strategy would likely make you miserable … that the strategy could actually shorten your life … would you do it ?
You will plateau using calorie deficit as your metabolism will move into starvation mode and it will become a lot easier to not only gain what you loss but put on even more
Kudos! Of course the likely rejoinder is, “I’m not talking about dieting. I’m talking about lifestyle changes”, wherein lifestyle changes is just dieting by a different name.
Love seeing the media whip libs into a frenzy with stupidity. Did we really think everybody Trump is bringing in would agree on everything? Especially minds like Musk, Ramaswamy and RFK Jr. What a shock. These A-type personalities don't agree on 100% of things. But media will keep putting it out there, because they have easy targets like you to get those clicks.
(1) the body controls for bother calorie intake and calorie expenditure. Commonly referred to as “appestat” and “exerstat.” (2) of those who lose weight short-term, the vast majority regain the weight long-term, often ending up heavier than when they began.
good article, though it’s more about subsidizing innovation, not the actual cost associated with it.. I understand why single payer countries cap drug costs, but why do American insurers negotiate such high rates when they have similar leverage to some of these countries when it comes to customers..
"Eat less, move more" does not work for folks that have endocrine disorders, cardiovascular and circulatory diseases, pulmonary diseases and folks with physical disabilities just to name a few.
End of the day it is super complicated and I don’t have a good answer with the current state of affairs. Personally I think we focus too much on drugs. That said they are vital in many cases as well. Just look at antibiotics. One of the great innovations. At the same time damage can be done by overprescribing. We spend way too much money on finding ways to combat issues instead of looking at what causes them. A big focus of the Blind Spots book by Dr. Makary I am reading. Many great things are happening and have happened. But the science can change. And it sadly can also be manipulated. And Big Pharma is out for themselves by in large imo.
