Outside the dugout: What's cooking?

    We have heard of people going to a Chinese restaurant for Christmas dinner. We were tired of cooking and went to Mr Han’s in Gainesville. We ordered a second of each dish to take home. I don’t think we will ever cook Xmas at home again

    Mr Han's is very good. I miss going there with my Chinese colleague that would order off menu and get GREAT stuff. He appreciated that I would always try anything.

    Today I am smoking a pork shoulder for pulled pork sandwiches. Going to make the Carolina slaw soon.

    Put a 4.4 lb pork shoulder on the KJ at 250 F just after noon. Temps have bounced between 240 F and 270 F all day. 5:15 and it still looks like it is in early plateau stage so I am ramping up the temps. I am sure that it has enough smoke. Cook quicker but rest longer has worked in the past.

    Not a fan of wrapping at this point. I like the bark.

    Slaw is made.

    BTW buying two packages of Ball Park hamburger buns for a total of 16 was almost as expensive as the pork shoulder at $1.99 per pound. Not shown on sale at my Publix but it is the usual sale price. Missed out on the pre-Christmas beef rib roast sale at $7.99 per pound and good cuts and not just the ends.

    We all are closing the kitchen and taking the night off from meal prep. We are meeting at Ably’s Chinese Restaurant and everyone will have their own choice there.

    It’s really nice to be with family during the holidays after so many years of being scattered.

    Tonight Alan and Abbey are grilling for Ms. Jan’s birthday! I know that our supper will include grilled steak, pasta , and some top shelf bourbon.

    Abbey has also worked her magic by baking Ms. Jan a birthday cake.

    We will again attack our leftovers for supper tonight. There is plenty to choose from and any choice will be quite good.

    I got a bottle of Knob Creek 9 yr old 120*— I think I will try it this evening. Ms. Jan will hold on to her chilled wine.

    Ground chuck burgers for lunch today, while watching Gator basketball's last game of the year vs the mighty Hatters.

    Fresh lettuce and tomatoes enhances the dining experience, as always!

    I usually don't do cheese on my burgers - but might today with Provolone.

    Pasta fagioli for dinner but not my mother's recipe that I sure that she got from her Polish mother. It is a good recipe but I want to change it up. There are many ways to make bean and noodle soup and nearly all of them great. My Grammie could really cook Sicilian food as she was a maid/cook for a Southside don back in the day. Not THAT one but she did cook meals for him when her boss had him over.

    I heard the story in my youth that my mother was helping serve dinner with Scarface in attendance and he asked my grandmother if she was baptized and he said that he would like to be the godfather if she wasn't. My Grammie deflected it as she wasn't at the time. You can't make this stuff up without hearing BS but I heard this story years before the book The Godfather came out. And that was NY mob and not Chicago.

    Leftover lasagna from Christmas, with a loaf of artesian bread and dipping sauce for tonight. That should do it for the lasagna.

    Tonight we’re having fried cubed pork, fresh yellow squash & onions, and julienne potatoes.

    I must say our night after Christmas supper at Ably’s Chinese Restaurant was enjoyed by everyone. Their menu includes Chinese, Japanese, and Thai foods. All three countries were tried and delicious.

    Ms. Jan’s birthday supper at Alan & Abbey’s was great. Grilled filet migiones were perfectly done and Abbey’s homemade Italian Cream cake was ++. Alan cracked open a bottle of 18 yr old Elijah Craig 128*…..smooth is the word.

    That was my grandmother's second husband. That was her in as a cook/maid. I only knew Grampa Bob that was her third husband.

    Much consternation when I was in first grade at Catholic school and I had more than two grandfathers. But not as bad as when I had to watch a film strip about Adam and Eve and they were both white and I asked where black and Asian people came from.
