The plane may have taken some damage by the missile system, but was still able to fly for a while, and then it came apart (or a critical system failed) as they were figuring out how to land it.

 

Don't they ALL go up and down before crashing? Landing, too?

I would agree to a duel, but if the idea is to showcase who has the best tech, let’s do it like this:

Both sides pick a 1x1m piece of terrain in an uninhabited part of their country (say, middle Siberia for Russia and somewhere in Kansas for the U.S.), put a plywood box of that size on the spot, then report the exact grid to the other side. On a specific day both sides agree to, each side gets to launch one precision-guided munition with a dummy warhead to destroy the enemy target. That munition can be launched from the air, surface, or subsurface, but it has to originate from outside the territory, territorial waters, or airspace of the targeted country. The firing nation must give the targeted nation a “one minute” call before the launch of the weapon and a rough geographic location of the launch vehicle. This to prevent the targeted nation from mistaking the competition for an actual attack. The targeted nation may use any kinetic or nonkinetic means at its disposal to interfere with the inbound munition inside its own territory. The targeted nation may not interfere with the target in any way and must allow a neutral third-party to observe the attack and assess the damage. I think this is a pretty foolproof test of each country’s capabilities and limitations with precision-guided munitions and defense systems. My only concern is that even with a 1000-mile safety radius, Russia still might hit Denver or some other population center instead of anywhere on the prescribed range.

I asked my brother (commercial airline pilot) about it right after it happened and this was his answer:
“Hard to say but it kind of looks like a scenario where you lose all flight controls. The only control left is engine thrust which might allow some control over the plane by using differential thrust as well as gaining and losing speed to affect the pitch attitude of the plane. It’s called a phugoid motion and there’s two crashes that happened this way that I know of. The United DC-10 that crashed in Sioux City and the C-5 that crashed during operation baby lift in Vietnam.

I’m sure the data recorder in this crash will narrow it down pretty quickly on what happened.”

I think he was correct as there are now photos of the plane showing shrapnel damage to the vertical stabilizer/tail section which likely took out their controls.

NATO expansion to the east brought about the Ukraine-Russia war. And now some of you are realizing that defending a country that is not part of Western Europe wasn't such a great idea.

Instead of bleeding Russia the war will end with Russia in control of Ukraine's vast energy and mineral reserves. Not to mention its richest agricultural land. The neocon plan was to use Ukraine to get rid of Putin, split Russia into smaller countries and grab its resources. Sorta backfired, huh?

For years Russia rejected attempts by Luhansk and Dontsk to become part of the Russian Federation. But Ukraine's oppression of the Russian-speakers, enabled by the US, continued.

If America had a monarchy headed by Elon Musk or the Trump royals this debacle would not have occurred. Monarchies are underrated.

The cause of the crash was almost certainly a Russian surface to air missile. Contrary to the images created in movies an aircraft targeted by a surface to air missile usually doesn't explode in a midair. The objective of the missile is to prevent a military aircraft from performing its mission. It does so through a warhead that explodes in close proximity to the target resulting in shrapnel which damages the control surfaces of the target aircraft usually along with cables, hydraulic lines and fuel lines rendering the aircraft incapable of continuing to fly. From the photos it appears that the plane was seriously damaged by shrapnel and additionally surviving passengers have indicated that they heard a loud noise, most likely a warhead exploding, immediately prior to the accident. By the way I actually have a little knowledge on how surface-to-air missiles function having completed the Army Air Defense Officers' Basic and Advanced courses at Ft. Bliss in 1974 and 1980 respectively.

 

Interestingly Russian speakers in Eastern Ukraine some of whom welcomed the Russians as liberators had regret within weeks of Putin's invasion.

All true things. Just for the sake of trivia, let me tell you about one advance in certain weapons systems since those days. Now there are weapons designed to go straight for the cockpit and target the pilots. Same principle as what you stated: disrupt the mission. Only in this case you also reduce the chances of the aircrew being rescued and coming at you again on a later date. Further, pilots understanding that they have less chance of surviving an engagement and being rescued carries a psychological impact that can likewise reduce mission effectiveness.

 

Putin makes his case for why Russia should be broken up into smaller countries after they are defeated by Ukraine. Apparently, Putin believes that Russians are a bloodthirsty people that needs to have bullets whistling past their temples for them to not be "bored". Yes, Putin is waxing nostalgic about bullets whistling past Russian heads. He seems to have seen one action movie too many. Peace is just too boring for Russian barbarians. Building a better world and cooperating with neighbors are not on the agenda. His speech seems to be mostly fiction, but he seems to believe in his own fiction. He's gonna miss this war when it's over. (A little too much vodka before the speech.)

One interesting part of the speech. In this version of Putin's lies, Ukraine is solely responsible for causing the war. There is no threat from NATO involved in the justification. Maybe that's just the vodka talking, but he seems to be saying that he's o.k. with Ukraine joining NATO after they win the war.

Obviously, the number of times that Putin says "horror" is indicative of how much blood and gore his people need in their lives to enjoy themselves.

 

Even the most western-friendly sources are telling us Russian forces had their best month in two years last month. Russia have recaptured large areas in Kursk. Since October up until now, the Russians have been advancing in Kursk and are making their largest gains of the war in the Donbas. I wanted to address each of your points, but we're getting into the weeds.

If Russian forces are advancing at their fastest pace since the beginning of the war (and all accounts indicate that is the case), why would we assume that we now have an upper hand in the situation? Because Assad got ran out of Syria? If we're being honest, that's probably a case of addition by subtraction. Russia cut their losses and they're not carrying the baggage of Syria anymore. Russia streamlining and going all in on Ukraine seems to be yielding results. Again, western sources are verifying these gains. We can't assume a position of strength in the negotiation when the enemy is making gains at their fastest clip in two years. The other stuff is just noise.
