The reality was known that the US would support the Al Qaeda-types in a war in Syria. The purpose was to destroy Syria to weaken Israel's enemy, Iran.

The idea was to create a "Salafist principality" in NE Syria to be a thorn in the side of Assad and the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).

A 2012 Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) document foretold the rise of ISIS in Eastern Syria:

Yes the US considered Al Qaeda and ISIS to be our enemies in Iraq. In Syria the head-choppers were seeen as allies. As Jake Sulliven told Hillary Clinton in 2022: "In Syria Al Qaeda is on our side."

Yes the US attackeded ISIS in Mosul. The idea was to funnel them to Raqqa, Syria where they could become the salafist principality" envisioned by the 2012 DIA document. One problem. Between Mosul and Raqqa was the city of Deir Ezzor which was occupied by Assad's Syrian Arab Army. The US opened the corridor to Raqqa by sponsoring attacks on the SAA in Deir Ezzor

This would enable the U.S. and its allies to create a "Sunni entity" in east-Syria and west-Iraq which would be a permanent thorn in side of Syria and its allies...

On August 18 Kurdish YPK units suddenly attacked Syrian government positions in the center of Hasakah in the north-east of Syria. Before this incident the relations between the two entities had been decent despite some earlier, small clashes. The attacking Kurds were under advice from U.S. special operators. When the Syrian air force intervened the U.S. threatened to down its planes. The Syrian forces had to eventually retreat from populated areas in Hasakah and are now confined to an airport next to the city. They are cut of from supplies and will eventually have to give up."

US airplanerses went on to bomb the most important SAA position in Deir Ezzor, which was immediately occupied by ISIS fighters. The city was surrounded by ISIS and they shut down the airport where the Syrian gov't sent food for the city's inhabitants. The city soon fell to ISIS head-choppers, as planned by the US (per the above article).

US airplanes attacked the most important Syrian government position in Deir Ezzor. Nearly a hundred Syrian soldiers were killed and most of the heavy equipment the Deir Ezzor garrison had left was destroyed. Immediately after the attack fighters of the Islamic State occupied the bombed out government positions. These Islamic States fighters now own the heights above the Deir Ezzor airport. While HTS is an offshoot of al-Qaeda that association ended over a decade ago and it's never been part of ISIS. Speaking of terrorists, right up until its demise the Assad government of Syria was considered a state supporter of terrorism by the US State Department and that designation goes all the way back to 1979 when Hafez al-Assad Bashar's father was running the country.

I was not expecting this. The Druze in Syria are requesting that their part of Syria be made a part of Israel, so they do not have to worry about radical or homicidal Muslims like ISIS being in charge. The Druze are not Islamic exactly, and not exactly Christian. They are Abrahamic and monotheistic.

Works for Israel. That said, if I'm Israel there is NO WAY I'm ever giving up Golan. Strategically. Tactically. No way you can do that. They had the higher ground, they lost it and will never get it back.

 

I can see a way they would, similar to returning the Sinai to Egypt, in exchange for full diplomatic recognition, a peace treaty, fair trade agreements, and demilitarization of the Heights with UN personnel stationed there to monitor it. All of that is far more valuable to Israel in the long run than the terrain itself is.

 

IDK. That's the epitome of high ground. Unless you are absolutely sure they are 100% friendly, I don't know if I'd take the chance. I think that was one of the issues in the 70s, that the Syrians were able to deploy on a plateau that overlooked Israel. Nevertheless, good points. Just not sure about the plausibility factor.

America was the protector of ISIS.
The US bombed the Syrian Arab Army as it tried to cross the Euphrates river (I believe) to fight them.

The US got caught dropping supplies to ISIS. It claimed they did so by mistake.

At one point people wondered why US forces stopped pursuing ISIS as it fled into the desert in NE Syria. A top US military official said it was because of sandstorm. As Bernhard at Moon of Alabama pointed out at the time, the sand storms had ended 5 days before.

It was the 60s, but, yes, Syria used that plateau to shell Israeli settlements right up until the day Israeli seized it with contemptuous ease in 1968. I think demilitarization (just as the Sinai is demilitarized of Egyptian forces) would solve that Israeli concern neatly.

Part of the agreement to return the Sinai to Egypt was that the US built an airbase for Israel in the desert. My dad was in involved in the building of that base
