This is not a secret code for selling all of your possessions and moving to Nemchinovka outside Moscow (that code is "do not beat the drowned crow"). Eating the brown snow could cause you to react caustically to bad news, such as Russia's losing the war in Ukraine.

In the quiet town of Rumford, Maine, where folks are used to the crisp, white snow of winter, residents woke up to a startling sight: their town blanketed in an unusual brown snow. The unusual phenomenon was caused by a malfunction at a century-old paper mill, according to town officials.

The mill malfunction resulted in the emission of spent black liquor into the atmosphere, which then tainted the falling snow. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, black liquor is a by-product of the paper-making process and is typically used within the mill to produce heat, steam, and electricity.

While the snow does not emit any odor, it initially had a pH level of 10 and can cause skin irritation, according to officials. "Although it is non-toxic, it should not be touched or otherwise put in contact with skin," the town advised in an official statement although in an update posted on Wednesday, officials said the pH level has dropped to 8.

Maine's Department of Environmental Protection is actively testing the discolored snow to ensure public safety. The mill has also agreed to pay for third-party testing which will be done independently with snow samples sent to a lab. "We are confident that the public safety concerns are minimal at this time. In the meantime, out of an abundance of caution, please avoid ingesting or direct skin contact with the brown snow," Rumford officials reassured residents via a Facebook post.

An Austrian company has decided to cut ties with Russia's Gazprom. (Not sure why they were not encouraged to do so before now, but whatever.) One more nail in Putin's coffin.

A European nation cut ties with Gazprom, saying it won't be 'blackmailed' by Russia

A European gas supplier ended a decades-long contract with Gazprom, the Russian state-owned energy juggernaut.

Analysts are hailing the decision as a sign of Europe moving to be more resilient in its energy supplies.

The Austrian gas conglomerate OMV announced on Wednesday that it was cutting ties with Gazprom over a protracted contract dispute, ending its dealings with Russia.

OMV was one of the last large, long-term buyers of Russian gas.

Russia shut down part of the world largest LNG plant, near Murmansk, leaving the better part of 15,000 employees out in the cold looking for work. Looks like the facility will be rusted into a garbage heap before Russia can find willing customers and start it up again.

Putin abandons Arctic gas production as sanctions bite

Russia has been forced to shut down part of the world’s biggest liquefied natural gas plant, near the Arctic city of Murmansk, after demand was wrecked by Western sanctions.

The Belokamenka yard, completed last year and designed to employ 15,000 workers, is deserted, with most contractors having quit the site.

The shutdown is a significant blow to Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, who last year toured the site with Leonid Mikhelson, head of Novatek, Russia’s second largest gas company, which built it.

Novatek produced 79bn cubic metres of gas last year, roughly equivalent to the UK’s entire consumption.

When the devil invades your country, you have to do something with him. The "savaging a generation of men" thing is on Putin. He is the blood-thirsty imperialist, not Zelenskyy. He is the one who inserted terrorists into eastern Ukraine in 2014, and he is the one allegedly fighting to protect those terrorists. Anyone who doesn't understand that and actually believes Putin's lies about fighting Nazis is probably a moron.

Another fail for Russia: two oil tankers were wrecked, with one sunk, off the coast of Crimea due to a storm.

Russian oil tankers sink off coast of Crimea

Russia mounted a rescue effort Sunday after two oil tankers were wrecked in rough seas off Moscow-annexed Crimea and one broke apart, killing at least one sailor and causing an oil spill.

Russia said a heavy storm sunk one of the ships, spilling oil into the Kerch Strait, while another tanker was also in distress after sustaining damage, Russian officials said.

Russian investigators opened two criminal cases to look into possible “safety violations” after at least one person was killed when the 136-metre Volgoneft 212 tanker, with 15 people on board, split in half with its bow sinking, footage published by state media showed, with waves washing over its deck.

Some more info on Ukraine's air superiority over the pathetic Russians. Since the west has allowed attacks deeper into Russia, Russian attacks with glide bombs have dropped by half. Russian aircraft have retreated to bases further from Ukraine, which reduces the number of sorties they have been able to fly.

Cockpit Video Of Ukrainian Su-27 Lobbing GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs

A recently released video from the cockpit of a Ukrainian Air Force Su-27 Flanker provides an unprecedented close-quarters view of the fighter lobbing a salvo of GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs (SDB) toward a Russian target. The U.S.-supplied weapon is part of an armory of Western precision-guided munitions integrated on the Soviet-era Su-27, others including the AGM-88 High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile, or HARM, and the Joint Direct Attack Munition–Extended Range, or JDAM-ER.

The footage shows the Su-27 — painted in a ‘digital’ camouflage scheme — launching a salvo of four of the U.S.-supplied glide bombs, while in a climb, at an angle of around 60 degrees. This maneuver has the effect of increasing the standoff range of the weapon while helping to keep the launching aircraft exposed to air defense threats for a minimal amount of time. It’s something that we’ve come to see regularly over the battlefield, performed by fixed-wing tactical jets and helicopters.

Ukraine’s use of the SDB, as well as other Western standoff precision weapons, mirrors Russia’s extensive employment of glide bombs of various types. While Russian standoff bombs have been a particular problem for Ukrainian air defenses, recent reports suggest that their effectiveness has started to drop off.

According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Russian attacks against Ukraine using guided aerial bombs have fallen by half, since Western partners allowed Kyiv to strike targets deep within Russia using long-range missiles. As a result, Russian tactical airpower has increasingly been pushed back to bases further from the front lines, impacting maintenance, sortie rates, and flight hours, which in turn reduced the number of sorties of this kind.
