    I understand the sentiment, but no. The courts wouldn’t allow it anyway.

    The players are now just playing by the same rules the universities and coaches play by. I don’t blame the players for this situation at all. The universities refused to adjust their archaic rules and the coaches backed the universities. The players got the courts involved, so now we have the NIL era.

    There are some rules, but nobody is enforcing them. That’s what got us where we are in the first place. Cheaters cheated and got away with it - others cheated and got hammered for it. NCAA credibility crashed to zero.
    No matter what rules are put in place going forward, it won’t make a shit bit of difference unless there’s also a system in place for enforcing them - consistently and fairly.

    Depends to a great degree on your time reference frame. Like many others here, I turned down periodic offers from head hunters and other companies I worked with in my career. Offers of step-jump salary increases. All of which I considered and subsequently turned down.
    37 years later I’m collecting a pension from the same company and sleeping at night.

    I certainly don’t expect 18-20 year olds to automatically ignore flashy glamorous short-term opportunities in favor of the long-term picture. But there are virtues to loyalty that I wish could be communicated to guys like #44 before they make irreversible decisions. Really wish Jack could have been a Gator for life. I guess it’s still not too late……yet?

    At this point they just need to move on and model the NFL contract structure for D1 athletes. Then contracts and tampering are enforceable through the legal system, something most university officials would want to avoid. The NCAA lost its front teeth after the SMU death penalty and has reached the point where it can barely put together a show cause for a coach. Push NIL/commercial endorsement back on the individual and their agent outside of attachment to a program. If you remove the financial incentive for this nonsense, then we’ll likely see a drastic reduction in mercenary status transfers and kids once again doing it for the right reasons. Just my opinion and no one in the system is listening anyway.:rolleyes:

    I'm not so sure that the courts wouldn't allow it...we keep forgetting that playing college sports is a privilege it is not a God given right in the constitution. The schools can still determine who they want to admit into the universities and therefore can determine if you are allowed to play for their university in athletics. I think the universities and conferences could still control eligibility. The courts have not challenged the four years of athletic eligibility the NCAA has imposed so I'm not sure they could overturn a rule that you have to sit out a year if you transfer.

    You are probably right in principle, but we've already seen that the schools don't give a shit about that. All they care about is national championship and money. So if you think you're gonna get these guys to all of a sudden, be honest and live by their word to make the system better. I think you're a bit delusional.

    God I hope so. NIL is nowhere near the problem that the portal is. Bring back the requirement to sit out a year and you’d see >half these problems disappear.

    Restricting them to go get a new job, which is kind of what this is might not make it through courts. I'm thinking they need contracts which they have to either honor or sit. The problem with that is making them employees but the real problem is schools prefer boosters to pay their bills. The big boys of college football run everything and until their boosters are fed up and quit they're not gonna be interested in another system just yet

    Not really. The universites tried to limit it to one transfer without penalty. The players sued and the universities folded.

    Playing college football is a job. Players have rights as an employee. It would be like McDonalds trying to block their employees from working at Burger King for a year after quitting at McDonalds.

    That was your choice. Players can also make their own choices.

    For a counter comparison, I have a family member who worked a long time at Raymond James. He was headhunted by Franklin Templeton. It was an enormous windfall for him and his family. He’s way ahead of the game for making the move.

    Well that is the core issue...are they employees or student athletes that are allowed to make money off their NIL. Even employees have non-competes in their contracts so yes you can enforce penalties for someone going to work for your competition. The next phase of this is the 4 years of eligibility. Many players are not good enough to get paid in the NFL but are excellent college players that could still get paid to play in college for a long time. Players are going to challenge the 4 yr. eligibility rule saying as long as they are in school they should be allowed to get paid and play for any university. If you can make 30-50K a month as a college football player for 10 years there are many that would do that as an option if they can't play in the NFL. I only see this getting worse with more court cases and lawsuits.

    Well, employees have no-competes if they agree to it.

    I had an employer that wanted me to sign a non compete. I gave him my terms for the non compete, he withdrew his request for the non compete.

    How he left is a different question than that he left. I generally agree you don’t burn bridges and I don’t feel highly compelled to judge 20 year olds for non abusive social media.

    As for the employee/student debate, the Supreme Court through Brett Kavanaugh literally laughed the NCAA out of court when they were arguing that players are purely “students“. The NCAA wants to keep the charade going because they don’t have to give benefits And their labor cost are subsidized through third parties (NIL payments). If the NCAA would simply do what is right and treat players as employees, then they could have collective bargaining, and be able to enforce salary caps, non-competes (limit nil type payments from third parties) and limit portal transfers etc. But they have always just wanted to maximize revenue and minimize costs.

    So we have former coaches at LSU and aTm tampering with our players as well as a coordinated attack from Kirby and Georgia in recruiting and portal. Awesome

    Of course it was my choice. I’m only pointing out that loyalty has its virtues. Unfortunately the present set of values in our society doesn’t respect loyalty in a world that is increasingly all about “me”. And it’s stupid — consider how much sense it makes for a corporation to eliminate all incentives for hanging onto employees they’ve spent tens of thousands of $$ training. Rather than offering a pension for staying with the corporation, they literally make it easy for employees to jump ship whenever they choose, just like the portal. “Portable pensions” - how absurd.

    It’s only a matter of time before the pendulum starts swinging back.

    When big companies started firing employees who were close to retirement to replace them with young, cheap labor, they lost their ability to ask for loyalty. I don’t think either side is loyal anymore. Obviously there’s still some exceptions, but I do not believe loyalty is the rule anymore, it is the exception. I also believe that this movement was started by the big companies, not the employees.

    I stayed with my company because I was comfortable, but I never felt they were very loyal to me. I actually had to work for a manager for almost 5 years who talked about firing me weekly in managers meetings. Not because I wasn’t good at my job, but because I was indispensable and he didn’t like how much he needed me and how protected I was by people with more power than him. I was reasonably compensated. I had lots of pto. I had several standing offers that would have provided me more room to move up, more money, etc. I was kind of at the top of my position where I was for almost my entire career, and I quickly made myself irreplaceable. What I made for what I had to do, along with how secure I felt in my job made it hard for me to move on.

    All that being said, if we were talking about significantly upgrading my salary and I felt I would have similar security and benefits, I would have been out the door before anyone blinked. I wasn’t anymore loyal to my company than they were to anyone else, and turnover was extremely high all around me. Not many people who worked there when I started were still there when I moved on.
