Trump translation please: Get rid of popular vote

Will ED then be a federal holiday with mandatory leave for people who want to vote? Will states stop pulling polling locations from urban areas to definitely not depress votes? Will we make it easier to obtain official government IDs?

This compromise has more nuance, IMO. When urban, predominantly black parts of Atlanta have so few polling stations that people wait up to six hours to vote, we have a problem. That’s where early voting helps mitigate overloading polling stations. I honestly don’t see why anyone would want to eliminate them outside of voter suppression.

 

If the EC is such a wonderful idea, how come no one else uses it to elect their leaders? Should have gone to the popular vote a long time ago. Other aspects of the original constitution have been changed, this needs to change too. Defending it is not about principle, but about power.

 

It's called "punking" the Left... ironically laughing at the Left's want to do away with the Electoral College and to vote for the POTUS with only the popular vote.

 

Smaller states do get a little more power in the EC which is as intended. If not for that, NY, CA, Fl, and Tx would come up with the rules for the whole country. If you look at ratios between population and number of EC votes a state like Oklahoma gets 1 EC vote per 570K (ish) people. CA is about 1 per 740K, NY is 1 per 714K and Fl is somewhere between at 1 per 733K. I don't think the discrepancies are as great as some would like to think. It's a little different in that the Census is used to determine population and is about 4 years old (or more) by the time the election is held.

 

Not really.... if you abandon the silly "winner take all" mentality and simply do a national popular vote, every vote anywhere in the US is worth exactly the same.

 

It’s amazing to me that anyone would argue with a straight face that my vote should be worth less because of my geographical location. I’ve lived in 8 US states and a US territory. Every place my vote would be worth something different which is asinine.

The voting system is broken when candidates are only incentivized to campaign in 8 states. It’s broken when an individual’s vote doesn’t even get tallied in the polling that matters. It’s broken when people justify partial disenfranchisement based on not liking majority rules.

 

Along those same lines when I was watching some polls close, as soon as Hawaii's closed, they immediately awarded their EC votes to Harris. It's like they didn't even count the votes. Similar in other states.

 

Who are 'they'?

 

The various news channels. I think I was watching NBC at the time but CBS and ABC did the same thing.

 

It’s not like that means anything. It doesn’t determine who wins.

 

There’s difference between the system and third-party predictions. This argument is akin to claiming college basketball has flaws because a betting site had Florida winning before the game was played.
