    Violent right doing its thing.

Red States Have Higher Gun Death Rates Than Blue States. Here’s Why:

    • A Third Way report found that between 2000 and 2020, Trump-voting states had 12% higher murder rates than did Biden-voting cities.
    • Data shows that in 2020, eight of the ten states with the highest murder rates voted for the Republican presidential nominee in every election in this century.

Unfortunately, we hear more about incidents like below than using a pistol to fend off home invaders. I’d bet more people in THFSG have first-hand stories of accidental shootings, egregious acts, or tragedies with guns than successfully protecting the home from thugs breaking in.

imo too many acquire guns without the proper respect and knowledge of gun safety.

She is so unqualified it boggles the mind. Having said that the leading cause of death in children is gun violence so maybe she can lend her expertise, or passion, there.

We won't want to admit it, but we all also almost certainly know numerous gun owners who are less than adequately responsible.

Over my lifetime the many many people I've known include gun owners who; have never properly been firearm trained, rarely practice, keep their weapon in a shoebox in the closet (or similar irresponsible location), frequently leave an unlocked gun in a vehicle, have had a firearm stolen from a vehicle.

And these are all "normal" people. We all know them.

But I've never -NEVER- known someone who, as a civilian, saved themselves from harm by using a firearm. Not a single time.

I have had guns all my life. My Father made sure I knew all about the responsibilities of gun ownership and the importance of proper training. We hunted on our property for food. All of my living children are well versed in gun safety and proper use of a gun. When my wife and I met 42 years ago, one of our early dates was I took her to a gun range. I showed her how to shoot and let her fire a few rounds. She enjoyed it so I enrolled her in a gun safety program and then we would go to the range about once a month. Gun ownership is a right guaranteed by our Constitution. If you do not wish to own a gun, I am okay with that. Some of you act like those who legally own guns just cannot wait to go out and kill others. I cannot even begin to wrap my head around that thought process.

60% of gun deaths are suicide and 37% are homicide — including the 1% of mass shootings. The remaining 3% of gun deaths include law enforcement involved shootings, unintentional shootings, and those that were undetermined

I would guess a big chunk of those homicides occur within the home the gun resides too, anyways if you meant this thread as a boast, stats say those guns will are more likely to kill the owners or their families than anyone else.

"My wife got a new gun" seems like bragging to me. That can also be a fact, they arent mutually exclusive.

I think the majority of the shootings are gang related and crime/drug related shootings. The same place the "children" 16-18 year olds are getting shot for the most part.

"The majority of shootings" aren't even homicides ... that was in the post I was replying to. As far as guns in the home, the chances they will be used in a gang shooting are next to zero unless your gun gets stolen. Slightly below the odds of it being used to protect yourself from some kind of home invasion scenario. If you have a gun in the house, the odds are greatly tilted to it being used against someone in the house, whether suicide, an accident, or homicide.

Anecdotal story (i agree with you for the most part), when I was very little we had someone break into our house in the middle of the night.
(Turns out ,they thought we were still on vacation). My dad quickly got his hands on his gun and very loudly proclaimed that "whoever was in our house better be gone before he turns the corner" he followed that with the sound of a "click click" and saw two dudes high tailing it out the back door. :D

So he didnt use It...but he sorta did.

You and your wife did it the correct way. I suspect a very significant percentage of gun owners have never sniffed a gun safety course or a shooting range.

To me guns are a tool. Tools can be misused. I own firearms and used guns as tools at work (dart guns, net guns, firearms). The night the drunken redneck chased me down in the middle of the Big Cypress at 3am screaming, hollering and pointing a gun at me, I was happy to have that tool with me and even more happy my buddy had a full auto tool with a red dot to point back. The drunken redneck ended up apologizing for his behavior - so that night they were a tool of reconciliation and friendship.
