So is this a trend of current head coaches stepping down to be OCs? I can think of 3…

Chip Kelly - left UCLA to be OC at tOSU
Sean Lewis - left Kent State to be Deion’s OC, then was demoted and left to be head coach again at SDSU
Gus Malzahn - surprisingly left UCF for the circus…maybe he was promised coach in waiting?

I think it is a good pickup for them as Gus has always been able to run the ball. To your point they need a dual threat QB and the Castellanos kid from Boston College is reportedly interested. Not a program changer, but I think he is a good player.

DJU can petition for medical redshirt and get a 6th year since that 2020 Covid year is free.

An FSU coworker told me he's coming back, just not to FSU. I said: "Damn"!

Drew Cronic stepped down as head coach at Mercer to take the Navy OC position last year. I believe the portal and NIL is taking it's toll on coaches. Navy coaches have had other coaches on the recruiting trail express their envy of not having to deal with the portal and NIL, which Navy does not do.

The service academies are the closest thing we have to college football as we knew it before Nil and the portal and TV contract for college football conferences before that altered the game forever.
The Army-Navy game is always looked forward to by me. No offense GatorNavy but, Go Army, Dec 14.

That would be glorious if it happened, but even if he did come back, I doubt he stays at FSU. Norvell would get ran out of town the moment he announces him as the starter.

DJ Ukelele was the best 500K they ever spent. Hope they double down on another bad QB.

No offense taken, but don't expect a Christmas card this year.

Come on now. I know we live in a crazy age but there is absolutely no evidence of this. Let’s not drag the guy’s name through the mud as much as we hate the Semis. Gus has zero history of this and in fact is considered a good dude in the coaching ranks in a nerdy, mad scientist kind of way.

Definitely a trend. Chris Peterson retired early at UW and Saban stated flat out that’s why he quit(NIL). Tons of coordinators and position coaches have taken lesser jobs in the NFL in the last few years.

I cannot imagine what it must be like to be a college coach and try to recruit high school kids, much less an HC in this day and age. Did you see Brian Kelly’s comments on signing day?

I don't know the guy and something could come out later. It happens. My feel is that he decided he's rich enough, wants to stay in the game, and doesn't want the entire weight and success of a program falling on him.

A coordinator does not have nearly the amount of duties on his plate as does the head coach. To some, it may be worth the pay cut to shed the aggravation of being a head coach. It's not like they will be in the poor house anyway.
