It's part of their CoreFSU, which links with the gen eds - a gen ed can carry the diversity designation, while also meeting the categorical requirement (i.e. social science). So basically, yes, it's part of the gen ed system and will likely be erased. Meanwhile, at my institution, we have a new gen ed category in Race, Power, and Justice. The people who cry "woke" sure would hate that. Crazy how different the university systems are based upon political ideology.

Our university system didn't used to be that way. A memo from only four years ago:
    https://www.flbog.edu/wp-content/uploads/DEI-Workgroup_MEMO_Final.pdf

The wokes controlling the government then were Ron DeSantis and the Republicans. The woke chair of the committee that wrote the memo is now the Chair of the Florida Board of Governors, the agency responsible for implementing these awful laws. He used to be the Chief DEI Officer at a major bank. Funny how things change.

Does it really matter? It’s not like a degree from FSU matters much.

The morons on the right think college is job training. As if I would ever hire someone from college that had any idea how to do the job I want them to do. I need them to have analytical skills, a basic understanding of business, and demonstrated the ability to learn and master subjects.

Even medical schools accept students without hardcore science degrees as long as they take a basic understanding in a few courses: biology, chem, etc.

They don’t “need” to be taken nor are they required. The question is whether they count for gen ed requirements or not.

These more specific subject matter courses probably count towards certain majors, and the only reason a non-major would take them would be to fulfill a gen ed requirement or perhaps if they wanted enough courses in a topic to have a minor or dual major.

One of the most successful people I know (in Finance) was an English Lit Major at Williams.

You dont "need" to take any gen ed class. I took music appreciation because it sounded interesting, and it satisfied a requirement, but there were hundreds of other classes that did too I could have taken if I didnt want to take that one.

For some reason the right wingers on this board always forget that. The only reason people started mentioning DEI and CRT as a bad thing is because of Chris Rufo. He realized MAGA would get all emotional if they were made into an issue.

If this was being done to improve education, it wouldn’t be targeting classes that “sound woke” but may in fact be serious upper level courses (at least depending on the individual instructor!), but would instead look at the giant auditorium sized classes that are well known joke courses but yet still count towards gen education. But of course we need those types of courses to keep athletes eligible! That’s why the biggest joke courses will persist, but they’ll drill down on course titles about women in literature or black history.

I’m sure just about everyone that actually went to UF heard about “the meat we eat”. I don’t recall what requirement that was supposed to fill (science for non-majors?). There were probably around 10 courses like that everyone knows about, and I’ll bet most of us took 1 or 2. I took Architectural History which was another well known joke course. I liked the topic and it filled a gen ed, so it was a no brainer. But it was such a joke based on how its grades were done I remember not even having to take the final because I already had an A locked in.

I remember taking Russian Cultural Heritage as a gen ed. I'm sure it will be made a requirement for all students soon.

If the course has broad appeal, then you will probably see a lot of students want to take it as an elective. As someone that is involved in the hiring process, I would like to see more schools focusing on ensuring that graduates leave college with the ability to write and express ideas clearly and concisely. I would be fine with several writing courses being required as part of Gen Ed, rather than the old Geology 101, aka Rocks for Jocks, or Wildlife Management, which I took at UF.

A reset has been needed on some of the required gen ed courses for 50 years

I didn't attend FSU. I value free speech. And my belief in free speech doesn't depend on whether I agree with what the person is saying, unlike freedom-hating MAGAs.

Come on, I get our sports rivalry. But stretching that into everything is bad there, the degrees are worthless, etc .... is just ridiculous.
