Totally agree about screw the Noles and Norvell due to their antics after a win... But I would like to see teams show respect to other teams logo. Good gamemanship... revel in the victory on any other part of the 85 yards not covered by the logo
This is playing out great for us in the media…. Billy has to publicly apologize, every news agency is covering Mike pulling the flag off… Here’s my point. When FSU cut sod out of our field we did nothing…. We got beat and apparently all of our pride left. We should have done something then. It’s not like we didn’t know they were going to do it. We decide we are going to “reply in kind” with the latest trend and Norvelle responded. He was the one who ripped the flag off the pole. There’s the difference. We had a chance to bury FSU last night. We could have walked off the field (like Texas did…) and the story would be UF finished the season strong, lots of potential etc… Instead, we get media coverage of Billy’s apology (which was well done) and color commentary of the FSU coach ripping our flag off the pole. In the moment there was nothing Billy could do. He had to take it, we were wrong. Winning a football does not entitle you to anything. We were disrespectful and they fought back. When people disrespect us, we don’t. I guess Urban did, but not in the moment. Last thing I’ll say about it. Bacon away.
Next year and going forward, I would announce to FSU that if they ever beat us again at our place, and if they vandalize our field by removing sod, the perps will be arrested and taken to jail the same as people who tear down our goal posts are arrested. It may not stick, but they would miss the bus ride home.
You are certainly entitled to your opinion and all things being equal I would prefer we didn’t do that at midfield, but kept the celebration on our side. However, you did not mention Norvel getting involved in the fracas which is unacceptable and has been roundly criticized in the media. THAT is the big story here. BN acting like a man and not a whiny brat is also a story - a good one!
In my opinion, he should have been involved. I think he did the right thing and I would hope Billy would do the same. I guess that’s where we differ. He didn’t punch anyone, to my knowledge didn’t get in any players face. He did get in Billy’s face, which he should have. Just ripped the flag off the pole and walked off. He could have sent the goons to do it, or hoped someone else did it for him, but he did it himself. I’m mad we provided him the opportunity. Ok, for real last thing. Just wanted to clarify.
Just to clarify, a 20 year old player, fresh off a violent game, plants a flag after a win and that is wrong. But a 59 year old man making $10M a year starts screaming after a loss, pulls the flag and throws it and that is what he should have done?? Man, we see the world very differently.
For the record, all about Sapp running around with a Seminole head. That, FSU had coming and is keeping with tradition.
ESPN commentators did not accurately portray what happened. If you watch the replay, a gator assistant immediately went for the flag when he saw Gumbs plant it. The assistant had it away from the scrum and Norvell ripped it from the assistant hands and then threw it. He did not take it from the ground at mid field where Gumbs planted it initially.
Social media really has made mountains out of molehills. What a non story that has taken control of the game discussions. Similar to the overreaction about maclwein chewing out Taylor in my opinion. Anyway...
I know that FSU has done many things of an unsportsmanlike nature in the past but we Gators should be above that kind of crap. I taught at UF for over 35 years and I was embarrassed. I knew about all the crap FSU had done in the past but we should be better than that. We are better than FSU but we didn't show that. I know that most if not all posters will disagree with me and I get that. We have had years of disappointment. But when we win we should win with class and not like FSU.
No. We should be above that nonsense. To retaliate or lower your standards is the easier path. It’s what weaker, unprincipled people do. Just because they can’t win with class doesn’t mean we shouldn’t. I applaud Napier for taking the high road and apologizing. Norvell is the one who comes away looking like a petty, weak, whining, little bitch.
We're 7-5, heading to a bowl, and have positive mojo. They are 2 and ten and still suck. A week from now, no one will care about the flag thing. GO GATORS!
I find it funny that everyone in media making such a big deal over flag planting. It seems like there have been more “storming the field” moments this season and it’s not even discussed. Field storming can actually be dangerous for everyone involved.
