Absolutely. If it were an away game in Happy Valley or Columbus or Eugene and the players did it, I would regard it as classless, because there's no history of disrespect from those teams. Even in Oxford or Birmingham. But the actions of the Criminoles have been completely out of bounds for years, so AFAIC it's justified and proper.

(Don't ask me about Athens.)

 

KD was running hard the final three plays --- I'm fairly certain he was trying 100% to break through and score each time. And yeah, I was cheering for him to do exactly that.

 

Right there is the rub. people in charge can make sure it doesn’t happen. Players who are allowed to misbehave on opponents turf should not be surprised or miffed when it happens to them. FSU behavior last Year was atrocious. See, that is the part that doesn’t make the news ..THIS YEAR.

 

It’s going to feel great being in the top 25 next week after our schedule and the way we started.

 

I think the team would have been even better if Mertz and D.J. were playing.
Seemed to me mertz really had complete grasp of the offense.
Not taking anything away from D.J. but it looks like he does need to develop some more.
Looking forward to when they open him up and we see him use his legs more.

Yep, lots of craziness has gone on in the rivalry over the years. Back in the 80's after we upset the noles in doak campbell, some uf fans made it onto the field and they thought it was a good idea to turn on the sprinklers which promptly got ripped up and trashed.

I agree with many here with long memories of the slights we have tolerated from those people.

Rivalry games are just different animals. I often argue with the Toothless masses here in Knoxville that the Vols are an important game but that they are not a “rival”. UF has 3 opponents I consider “rivalry games” and they are Miami, Georgia and the School Out West. Those 3 have long history, geographic significance and cultural significance that extends beyond mere sport.

I witnessed my first flag plant in an opponents venue in 1996 when Lawrence Wright, who had been parading with a Gator flag around the NE corner of Neyland in the victory euphoria. Eventually, he simply planted the pole in the orange checkerboard of the north end zone and that was that. It wasn’t at midfield or on the big T. No Vols rushed to reclaim their stained honor at his provocation. It was recorded on video and film, though.

I would be embarrassed at a provocative flag-plant / logo-stomp type of disrespect if it happened in Athens or Coral Gables, even though those are “rivals” as I define it. It would be cheap, and grossly antagonistic and sure to provoke a wider reaction that reflects badly on UF.

Those people in Tallahassee are a different sort of rival and I have felt this way about them since 1978, my first year at UF. They are not merely a “rival”: they are a “HATED RIVAL”, a subset of rivalry game that is reserved for the worst of the worst. In conflicts with hated rivals, there is a cultural animosity that inspires a fierceness that would be unexpected with anyone else, and it works on both sides. In such a conflict, combatants will be expected to exceed the norms of behavior expected in other civilized conflicts.

Atrocities, as defined by the normal rules of conflict, are to be anticipated in hated-rival conflicts. There will be excesses, driven by the passions of the participants, to take revenge, to pay back an old insult, to leave a shocking reminder for those that come behind.

Leaders, coaches in this case, must expect their men to carry their passion into the conflict, and to channelize it into better performance. There is a reason for the aphorism “throw the records out the window” in a rivalry but IMO even more in a HATED rivalry game. The troops are motivated by deep emotional fire in these games and we have all seen the plucky loser rise up to smite the odds-on favorite time after time. If the leaders are seen in these expected intense battles to permit the atrocity, they have lost control of the troops and the expected confidence of the institution they represent. But they also cannot so contain and tamp down the passions of their troops that they seem to ignore the source of the motivation given hatred in the game. They must also ensure that no atrocity is committed during the game. That violates all codes of conduct. If there are going to be excesses, they should come outside of the game itself, before or after. It’s a reflection of discipline that is the basis for behavior in human conflict.

When it comes to the team we played last night, I appreciate that the current generation of players seems to have the same level of animus that I specially and historically reserve for those people. (See my post elsewhere RE events of that week in 1981.) They have been my hated rival longer than most on here have been alive. I’m glad our head coach is saying the right things to reflect that he will rein in the troops for their zeal. It’s to be expected lest we think our team is a mere passionate mob. Discipline must be restored…after the troops have had some appropriate time to assuage their rage.

 

When you win, you don’t need to worry about what teams might do to your turf.
You beat them on the field and relish in it. Just because they are trailer carnival dwellers doesn’t mean we are.
If you want to hold yourself to a higher standard, act like it. Folks celebrating acting like the folks we called Pos’s last year. I get it, bring back the turnover majorette baton.

Now, how about the DL and how many times we ran blitzing backers to drop a DE in coverage

Yep, turning the other cheek is for somebody else. I never forget and make payback twice as bad. SOS called a timeout and scored right? Very disrespectful and meant to be that way. Things teams do are remembered.

 

I hope we have a longer discussion or it’s own thread about this in the offseason
But I think the worst thing thst could’ve happened in winning the final 3- is a confirmation to Billy that his nail biting - close game -23-17 win- style is going to win big in the SEC.
Positives - defense turned a corner, off season coaching moves paid off especially in tackling, simplifying the D led to a nasty turnaround, young talent abounds led by a beast junior class
Negatives- still trying to win in a phone booth and not using the whole field, personell choices are mind boggling, WRs are NOT gonna wanna come play in an offense that usually sees not enough balls to go around, unwillingness to play 4-5 wide or use tempo
The end of Ole Miss was a nail biter that put tremendous, uneccasary pressure on the defense to make stop after stop when if you are a little more aggressive on offense and have better clock mgmt that’s a 2 score win

I hope Billy gets an OC

 

People who want aggressive should be careful...you'll get Lane Kiffin who aggressived Ole Miss to a playoff-denying loss. I'm happy with Billy's play calling in that game. "Complementary" football kept them out of the end zone the second half.
