My days of pulling for the SEC SEC SEC opponents in any game are lost in my rear view mirror. We’re charter members of this good ole boy conference and for 92 freaking years they’ve never liked us. They’ve screwed us with their double standards in rules, officiating, and scheduling. And we recruit against them. Every damn one of them can kiss my butt and it’s long past time for us to return to kicking their sorry asses again. And I hate the semis worse than any of them. Ref$u is the only team I’ll pull for an SEC team to beat. Go Gators.
I’ve read the past 5 pages of this thread and all I can say is that it takes special kind of people to turn a feel-good, potentially turning point in our program moment, into a hate fest. Nevertheless , still entertaining …
Yeah I’ve been here for quite a while. All this SEC SEC SEC stuff is for fans living vicariously through other teams to make themselves feel better about their team that hasn’t won anything. South Carolina comes to mind. We were in that boat until SOS arrived and took us to the top of the world. I remember going to the Sugar Bowl game between Paterno and Bryant back in 1979. Epic game. I was all decked out in red and white pulling for Bama, like I was actually a fan of that team. When in reality, pulling for Bama was some way of making myself feel better about our team which certainly hadn’t accomplished much in the previous 50+ years in the SEC. Looking back on it, I’m pretty disgusted with myself
Cheering for SEC is purely in self interests for me. SEC being dominant opens more doors to the playoffs, increased revenue so on and so forth.
I only disagree to say Charley Pell had some darn fine football teams in the 80s. I will always count 84, 85, and 90 in with our SEC championships. UF won them where it counted, on the field. I'll always despise the SEC for voting to rescind UF's 84 championship after the fact, something not before or since done to any other SEC team. My biggest hate is UGALY. They led the charge to strip UF of its 84 SEC championship, but that is just the tip of the iceberg.
I overall agree but previously there were times when better SEC unity was needed. We all know Rex Grossman deserved to win the Heisman over Eric Crouch but the SEC wasn't much of thing at that point so all the writers banded behind the throwback QB from the Midwest. We all remember how Urban Meyer had to "politick" to get Florida into the 2006 National Championship Game over Michigan because that was not automatic. But by 2008 or 2009 when the SEC became unequivocally dominant, we don't need it anymore and all the other schools and administrators can go to h3ll now.
If it makes you feel any better I was stationed at Long Beach Naval Station in 1968 and a group from my ship went to a USC vs Miami game at the L.A. Coliseum. I was actually cheering for Miami. (USC with O.J. Simpson won) I still can’t get the stink off my memory of that. I only get through those painful memories by using the youthful naïveté excuse, but deep down I realize even a 5 year old Gator fan should / would have known better.
When only two teams really had a shot, I agreed with this. When it went to four, it was less important. Now at 12, it’s even less important. The sec IS strong. That’s just a simple fact. If we win our games, we’ll end up where we want to be. If we don’t, we get what we get. Me rooting for every other team in the conference to lose every game they play won’t make it so. When we’re down on our luck, I root for chaos. If we’re in the hunt, I may slightly pull for one team over another if it directly affects our chances. Who I root for won’t have any impact on the outcome of the game anyway.
Week 14 of the AP poll and UF received 4 votes. Maybe with a strong finish in the bowl we could actually end the season ranked!!!
I'm so glad that these 4 items continued to be true against Ole Miss! I must admit, as much of a "sunshine pumper" I am, I did not expect us to hold Ole Miss to 17. That was impressive!
They should restore it. UF should at least fly the banner in their faces to remind them that they are chickenshit hypocrits
Yeah, we broke all their defenses season avgs. Rushing we more than doubled whatbthey allow, points, we held them.under their offensive numbers as well. Allowed only 17 points, kept them under their passing yards per game, rushing yards per game, destroyed their 3rd down % and 4th down % avgs., 1st downs gained were below. We shut them down in the redzone, 4th downs. We won the turnover battle with the team ranked among the top defenses in the SEC. And we are the only defense that stopped that DT who they use in short yardage. He came in 12 for 12 on 3rd/4th downs/goalline TD attempts and we stopped him 3 times twice on 4th down. But I guess because some stat sheet says we are 16 out of 16 in defense there's no way we just out performed the team that is one of the best in the conference/country on defense.
