Isn't the IC going to be an issue for anyone Trump puts in there? I mean, if there is one cabinet position that will encounter the most delay, stall and obfuscation, it's going to be Trump's AG.
It could be that Gaetz was seen as a sacrificial lamb. Trump had Bondi lined up and ready to go.. I believe he announced her in less than 24 hours after Gaetz withdrew. By sacrificing Gaetz, Trump can ask for more grace on another pick like RFK, for example. Not sure what is going to become of Hegseth.
I don’t buy that for a second. If that was truly his chess move, the better play would’ve been to have Gaetz fail at the nomination, and then “compromise” by withdrawing Gaetz. As it stands, there was no “deal” other than by the House to not release the release its report, something supported by the timing of the stalemated vote and his withdrawal of the name. If that was truly Trump’s chess move, he payed it terribly and wasted the opportunity.
People wonder why he's giving up these names so early in the process, just to see the Leftists can rail against the picks for weeks to come. He's smoking out the rats... And it's working.

This is why Gaetz feels like a straight-up troll. No real thought other than, "Watch the libs go crazy!" Even if you believe the most diabolical scenarios Trump has for AG, Bondi is a far better (and more legitimate and credible) person to do that given her resume and and experience in executive positions. Gaetz was always going to be a clown that nobody outside of MAGA world took seriously and, in that respect, would be far less effective in implementing those diabolical plans.

I will say this about Pam Bondi. Although I have a lot of problems with her unlike Matt Gaetz lack of qualifications is not one of them. Trump's first nominee for AG was perhaps the least qualified person for that position in the history of the Republic, Pam Bondi on the other hand is very well qualified. Interestingly, Trump considered her as his AG after he was elected in 2016 but decided not to nominate her based on the possibility that she could have problems with confirmation stemming from her decision to drop the case against Trump University after receiving a large campaign contribution. The fact that she should sail through the Senate this time around demonstrates how much the ethical standards for cabinet level nominations from Trump have dropped in the last eight years and how subservient Republican politicians and specifically senators are to Donald Trump.
I get that sentiment. I also think we...on my side and your side...need to hope some good, decent people are willing to work for him. (Mike Pence). Otherwise there isnt an ounce of accountability.
I would agree that there is no doubt as to her competence although being competent and well qualified doesn't necessarily mean that she will be ethical. She could still use the power of the DOJ to prosecute Trump's real and perceived political opponents and her authority as the AG to purge career attorneys and other employees of the DOJ and FBI who have been involved in the investigations and prosecutions of Trump.
No, I think Trump saved time and egg on face by having Gaetz withdraw now. The Senate made it clear Gaetz's confirmation was going to be problematic. The die had already been cast. No use in wasting everyone's time trying to get a cabinet appointee through the Senate when everybody knows it's a losing effort. Trump still retains the "you shot down my nominee" card. The fact Gaetz didn't have formal hearings is probably better in this regard for Trump, because the Senate would have been exasperated at Trump by that point that he wasted their time on something he knew wasn't going to fly.
The argument I was responding said that Trump planned the bait and switch the whole time (Gaetz for Bondi). If that was truly the case, he should’ve waited until the confirmation hearings. Then, he could said he’ll withdrawn Gaetz and replace him with Bondi in return for …. If it was all part of a grand plan, he missed the opportunity to play out the hand and get his “in return for …”. That’s why I pushed back on the “chess move” argument.
Trump and his advisors had to know this was going to be difficult. I think that is why "recess appointments" were mentioned. Gaetz was the sacrificial lamb. His withdrawal will help ease everyone else through, not there won't be some fights over a few of them. RFK and Hegseth to name a few.
Trump's charitable organization was fined over that donation. It apparently didn't occur to them that charities can't contribute to political causes.
