1979 was the worst season in program history in terms of total losses. Aside from a 7-7 tie against Georgia Tech, Florida lost every game, including blowout losses at the hands of Kentucky (31-3) and Alabama (40-0). Six of its 10 losses came by double-digit points with an average point differential of 14.5.
I was right there with you throwing in my towel on Billy. I posted accordingly in the Miami OGT. Like you, the last 3 games have given my cause to conditionally reconsider. Yeah it was the most rational thing to do at the moment. And I believe they had to do something, as doing nothing would infect everything from player morale to recruiting over the next 3-4 weeks. Not really a shock, Stricklin was never going to get to hire the next guy. Also don't think this changes recruiting, this isn't the old days when a kid wants to know if his coach will be around for 4 years, guys can bail at anytime, they don't care about that anymore.
Listened to Shane on the 1010xl yesterday in Jax. Made some good points about how UF is starting to play best players and not rotating to keep them happy with playing time.
Do we really care at this point that the players like the coach and want to play for him? Is this what big time programs do? Should we care that he is a nice guy like Zook and Muschamp? No, they fire the Ed Orgerons, Clay Heltons, Brady Hokes, Mike Shulas. Clay Helton is a perfect example of the one program that didn't fire at the right time. He set back their recruiting horribly and we are facing that now. I don't care who hires the next coach. It just need to happen. There are a couple of good options who might not be available next year.
You want to stabilize the program? Billy should try winning. Heard that works wonders for stability and recruiting.
Money will, and I think instead of using the funds for a buyout they will use it for NIL. There wasn’t a whale on the line, and without a new president in place this was probably the best move. Lagway has shown he’s a difference maker, and top talent will come because of him. Either via recruiting or transfer portal.
I think it will, but you could also be right. We'll just have to wait and see. If I'm a player on the fence, knowing the coach who is recruiting me will be there next year would make my decision be about things other than whether my coach will be fired before I get there.
I think it was obvious that I was just giving my own personal estimate and it wasn't to be taken as scientifically collected data. The irony is that you are doing the exact same thing by saying you "looked at multiple sites" and saw xyz. We are just stating our non-scientific observations.
Having been a Gator since 1963, I have learned that fans are happy to tell you what they think. It is not science, just opinions. Opinions from the same fan often vary from season to season and even game to game. Remember, “We all stick together”
