This board today is like nursery school ramblings compared to its earliest days. Fortunately the most strident of those posters have moved on to their safe space where they can pontificate about murdering Democrats to their heart's content.

Regarding national political violence, anyone notice that Trump has shifted from his traditional red/white MAGA gear to the black/yellow color scheme of the Proud Boys as Election Day nears?

At least a tad, inescapably ironic--that a post intended to call us all out for our exaggerated intensity in our political discourse, would end with the very same note it sought to admonish.

Or is it cleverly apropos? o_O;)

That was hardly the earliest of days on here--that wouldbe the earliest days of Trump, not TH--and their discourse wasn't nearly that bad.

Maybe it is in their new safe space, but it's all behind a paywall now, unless you're paying, you're just conjecture.

I'm primarily talking about the last days of Clinton before some board rules were put in place here. A lot of those same posters could tolerate this place because Bush was in charge for 8 years. After that, they became deranged.

Yes, but not necessarily, in so much as we are *more* than we are ITRW, in order to further specific points--but they're (presumably) still very much us, or consistent with our actual views.

Where reality and exaggeration part however, is in the degree of our commitment to certain causes--on here (and else whereol on line), we don't give a damn how our views are received by others.

ITRW however, our commitment to issues is subordinated to our valuing of peace, harmony, and civility with our neighbors, and our actual business at hand.

As well it ought, part and parcel to what is actually meant by the term "educated" (ie--why the internet has not and will not, supplant the university).

If this forum was face to face in a physical sense, the animosity, name calling and accusations might be toned down. The ability to hide behind an electronic veil gives many the green light for what Lacuna is talking about imo.

There are plenty of good discussions on here. Sadly some threads are hijacked by the fringes represented on here. Insert obligatory Trump/Kamala/nazi/commie/liar/stupid references to turn posts into another pissing contest. Then there’s those who are in the right or know more than others. They have no problem putting it in their faces. Intolerance is alive and well, it harkens back to the days of me and Nana trying to moderate the daily scuffles with Texigator and Shabadoo25/FredSanford.

Respectfully, I disagree. I think the electronic veil actually gives the greenlight for many to run from the truth.

I love discussing politics in person, particularly with people who disagree with me. It's the perfect opportunity to hold a conversation where the actual facts must be held in account. I always specify that nobody can lose their temper and we can break the conversation as needed to determine the actual facts.

In person, they can't just bug out when respectfully presented with all the accusations, admittance, and evidence of his sexual predation, for example.

A simple fact check renders moot their belief that he was great for the economy. It can mandate confronting all the lies he told about covid and, well, really just about everything.

To summarize, IMO the "electronic veil" is most harmful because it allows people to just run away from the actual facts and continue dwelling in an alternate reality.

I don't disagree with you, WES. And I can agree with Ginny Stroud, though I had not heard of her before your response to my post. I'm descended in part from the Lee family and sharply aware of their part in the founding of the United States. The first Lee to migrate to this country in 1642 established his fortune trading with American Indians. He was a second or subsequent son born in a family with minor royal connections, and used those connections to establish himself in the colony. His grandson acquired thousands of acres through royal land grants. The Lee's land was planted in tobacco and worked by some of the first slaves brought to the colony. He promoted slavery in Virginia, encouraging other wealthy landowners to do the same. Two great grandsons of the first Indian trader Lee signed the Declaration of Independence.

Lee's promotion of slavery and the acquisition of slaves to work his fields was not a moral practice, and I can rightfully conclude he and his contemporaries were not morally upstanding men. Other than a misplaced sense of entitlement I don't know how he and other planters justified the greed that drove the vile practice and I make no excuses for him or his sons, other than to allow their support of American independence helped established a nation that has benefited many and yet endures.

The family lost their ill gotten wealth after the Civil War, and great or great great grandson General Robert lost his reputation and what honor he might have had. Though misguided, these Virginians were brave bold men to essentially bite the king's hand that enriched them.

It was selected out of convenience. It was posted most recent and perfectly illustrated my concern. Projected accusations of hate on this forum and elsewhere have long distressed me and when I read the charges of hate this particular poster had placed on another thread I was impelled to respond.

    Your supposition is correct
I'm sorry you received such an impression. It was not my motivation

In my mindset last night I would have posted the same thing using a post of hate projected from a liberal if one had first come to my attention as I know liberals also project hate. There are many to be found on this forum. After making the post I did a brief search of 'hate' knowing someone would make that charge of me as you did. There are dozens / scores of posts containing 'hate' from both sides.

The first listed mentions or admissions of hate, not all necessarily projective, came in several recent exchanges between @Orange_and_Bluke and @FutureGatorMom . On the 5th 'search hate' page there are admissions of hate from posters you might consider liberals. One is decidedly a moderate, imo.

They can be found searching 'hate' or 'hateful' on the GC search engine. Pointing a finger was not my intention. Do your own search and discover which side projects hate most often. No side is exempt. Look for yourself.

Of course it does; it works both ways. IMO this is what the OP is talking about. The instant knee-jerking response and calling people liars because they have a different POV. Apparently, we have to live in a black-and-white world with no other color valid. Civil discussion went out long ago around here. Add the cheerleaders, adding fuel to the fire, and this place really can be an outhouse.

You have to admit, though, that there are quite a few people here repeating Trump's lies. Or attempting to further his false narratives, such as; the 2020 election was dishonest, the Biden DOJ is committing "lawfare" against Trump, or the "both sides-ing" that tries to assert that, for example, anyone in leadership on the left is anywhere remotely close to mimicking the hateful, lying vitriol we see regularly from Trump.

At some point, well, the actual facts are black and white. And there's nothing uncivil about requesting that our discourse be honest.

Definitely- I hate crime, traitors and un-American behavior.

You should give that a try, instead of voting for it.

You should also learn the difference between the words of a private citizen on a message board and the hateful lies of a national politician addressing the country.

Edit: I don't lie though. Would be interested and amused to see you try to substantiate that.

But if I DID lie, you'd vote for me as President?

You just don’t ******* get it do you? This is about us, not Trump or lies or anything else. I know what Trump is. I don’t need it repeated in every damn post you type. Do you need validation or something? Are you that unsure? It seems it.

Just the vitriolic crap you spew on a regular basis and then scream liar! when you don’t like the response or POV. Its pathetic. You cant even own up to what you post.
You don’t lie? ….ya sure MiStar perfect. It’s all relevant in your little world.

I appreciate the responses posted on this thread. And the various ratings that caught my eye. Most surprising were the 6(? I think, would need to go back and do a recount) tags from @g8orbill who has been restrained from reading and posting on Too Hot for several years. I'm wondering if his distribution of ratings on too Hot posts indicates restraints on Too Hot posting have been lifted.

Welcome back, Bill. I must admit I did check to see if a warning had mysteriously cropped up on my profile page. :D

Strange words equal to the strange perception that apparently preceded the report my OP violated the 4 paragraph rule. o_O

At the end of that OP I announced I would likely stop reading and posting on Too Hot after the election, but before I close out that chapter I wanted to add I'm profoundly disappointed at the results of yesterday's election. I hope I'm wrong about the direction I fear Trump is going to steer the nation, but resigned to it as it is the will of yesterday's electorate that he be in charge.

The joyful relieved excitement expressed in posts made by Trump supporters is understood. Without doubt Harris supporters would feel the same satisfaction if the situation were reversed. However, the schadenfreude displayed in the gloating, mocking tenor of some on the winning side is disappointing. Please consider your motives before posting. The words you choose convey your attitudes and motivation. Words chosen to sting are not chosen from a lexicon of kindness. They are chosen from a warped need to hurt or punish. They will only prolong the destructive division, not foster the healing or encourage the cooperation or conversations of reconciliation this nation sorely needs.

It will be difficult to sever my association with this forum. It's been a daily fixture for many years. But it is for me an unhealthy place to spend time and necessary to distance myself from the discord. I thank the many of you who have befriended me and messaged me with encouraging words. I count many of you who post here as friends.

Sorry if I upset you today lacuna.
    I literally cannot help myself.
But please don’t take politics too seriously.
These aren’t normal people we’re electing.
