Lol. The guy is a reasonable amount of weight away from being a realistic pick for TLC's 600 pound people show. It's not "shaming" it's a health issue and an obvious strength and conditioning problem. Shaming is just a catch phrase made popular by people too lazy to put in any work change themselves.
Nonsense. Calling him a "circus attraction" is done out of pure assholery and not out of some great concern for his health. People are also overly critical of his play, which has been serviceable, because "big man so big lay horizontal lolol hurr durr" Should he work on leaning out? Of course. Do people give him more crap than he deserves? Also yes.
They would get targeting every game with todays rules. You can't hit guys that hard anymore without drawing a penalty.
Absolutely, but it was great to see and left an impression on those they hit. However, I doubt they would be arm tackling like what we continue to see from DBs.
He's not lost an ounce since he's been at UF. In fact, I believe he's gained weight, which you can't do without eating more calories than you use. Do I think he's a circus attraction, no. It's definitely a health issue, you're right. Criticizing his play is warranted because he's abused by offensive lineman weighing a hundred pounds less than him virtually every play. He can't shed a blocker to save his life. Hell, for that matter, do you remember when he intercepted a pass and was pulled down by the arm by a guy less than half his weight? He's big, and that's it.
My sons played against Dez his senior year and I was really impressed. He was huge for HS but moved very well and was surprisingly athletic. I assumed he'd shed some weight in a college S&C program and really blossom. He has steadily gained weight instead of losing it and not only has his relative speed been impacted, so has his endurance, which was never his strength. He's been a body more than anything else as far as his pressure, tackles, or freeing up others through double teams are concerned. He does clog a lane but tends to get pushed around more than you'd expect at his size. The fact that he gets as many snaps as he does says more about our DL depth than his production. I do hope he'll finally be able to lose weight at some point, if not for his play then for his health.
Yes. He can be a Gator to appreciate and also one who shouldn't be starting. We were on track last fall to continue building a great team over the next couple of cycles but it's mostly gone downhill since. I doubt there's enough NIL money for anyone to overcome so many losses. You may be able buy players but they aren't going to be top line winners. Winners want to win.
Some of the other injuries looked potentially serious as well. Anyone with any updates, and how might those affect your position analysis (at least for this season)?
Yes, fox, I think you are spot on here. Billy has lost too many games he should have won. I don’t think a lot of posters realize how much we are teetering on becoming completely irrelevant for a long time. The gators may end this recruiting cycle with the last ranked class in the SEC. Let that sink in. Billy had his chance. College football at this level is ruthless…that’s why they’re paid ridiculous amounts of money.
The strength and conditioning program has been a huge problem for this team the last few seasons. IMO, started the year off out of shape and easily wore down. Lines of scrimmage were being pushed back. Non contact injuries are baffling. Correct me if I am wrong but didn’t Billy try to hire a new coach but he bailed after a few weeks to be replaced by a guy with limited experience while demoting the former guy to assistant hydration specialist?
All true, but there's no conditioning for tendons, especially when your feet slip on shitty turf. Hyper-extensions are another thing that conditioning can't addess. Hell, players complained about McElwain's tenure due to the virtually non-existent conditioning.
Calling it a "catch phrase" is a lazy way for a prejudice person to make themselves feel better about being called out. Just say no to fat shaming.
Calling someone prejudice is a lazy way for someone with no argument to try and silence others. Just say no to fallacies. And for the record I lost about 80 pounds when I was 27ish and have been a normal weight since. I'm hardly prejudice against fat people, I just know most of them (99.5%) simply don't want to do the work to fix it.
