Shocking and disgusting move from the Polk County Sheriff's Department. They end up protecting a child rapist and convicting his victim of a crime, forcing her to write apology letters for reporting him. A year later, she collects her own evidence and proves that he was indeed raping her. (Note: This all happened seven or eight years ago when she was a minor.)
Story of Lakeland woman's rape as teen gains national attention
Less than an hour after being raped by her adoptive father along the side of a country road, the 13-year-old girl stood in the darkness, clutching the cell phone that held video and photographic evidence of his crime.

Preparing to dial 911, the girl paused, thinking back to a year earlier, when she had gone to law enforcement to report Henry Cadle’s sexual abuse, only to have an investigator from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office accuse her of lying.

The NewsHour segment emphasized that Taylor felt it necessary to gather evidence on her own to prove that her adoptive father had raped her. She took those brave actions knowing that about a year earlier, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office not only declined to arrest Henry Cadle but charged Taylor with filing a false report.

At the suggestion of her adoptive mother — Henry Cadle’s wife — Taylor pled guilty. As part of her probation, she was required to write letters of apology to Henry Cadle and to Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy Melissa Turnage, the officer who interviewed her after the original complaint.

Grady Judd is a camera hogging embarrassment.

That girl's mother should not have been advising the girl. The judge should have appointed a guardian ad litem to act as her parent during the court proceedings. The mother was clearly conflicted.

Deputy Turnage should be writing this victim a letter of apology.

Netflix “Unbelievable” is based on a real story and similar result. Happens too often even today.

Pretty horrible story on multiple levels:
The way far too many kids have to live. No family structure, foster homes, abuse ...
    Raping a 12-year-old???
A police interrogator warning her that if she's telling the truth, she'll have to go back to foster care?
She was charged with filing a false report ... at the age of 12?
The sheriff's department says the story is full of holes and half-truths, but won't do anything to correct them?

Meanwhile, the way the 13-year-old carefully documented that final rape is pretty amazing. If every bit of that is true.

Wow! Very surprising from the department that claims they’ll chase a child predator to the ends of the earth!
They forced that poor girl to write an apology to the deputy who charged her, Melissa Turnage, for filing a false police report, absolutely disgusting. I’d really like to hear what Turnage has to say for herself now? Imagine threatening a raped 13yo with sending her back to foster care, bet Ms. Turnage felt real tough doing that.
I’m sorry, I’m just so angry, I feel like police should’ve had a better way of dealing with this, to even charge her? It’s disgraceful! Can you imagine what could’ve happened to her if she’d been caught gathering the evidence she knew she’d need to make it stop? He could’ve really hurt or even killed her and that would be ALL on that deputy!

This is the same smug asshole sheriff whose antics a certain contingent on here finds entertaining. Not surprised at anything this lowlife does.

It’s exactly what one would expect from the types of cops who preen for the cameras.

They care more about appearances than outcomes.

People proclaiming they want to protect the innocent seem to care more about fetuses than living, breathing children.

Florida currently has more than 20,000 kids in foster care, ranking in the top 3 states (with Cali and TX). Much of the stipends paid for care comes from Federal Title IV programs, not state funds.

We can and must do better.

Every one of us wants to see criminals like this locked up. How can we do better? it’s easy for Judd to give cool speeches to the press bragging about how police will kill criminals, and hire officers expected to be “tough” (which can lead to police brutality). After I watched a video on this case, a striking detail is that the woman interviewing the young victim appeared genuinely unaware of the signs of abuse. A lack of training was evident and mentioned, especially in the soft skills that MAGA often dismisses and even mocks. As a result, this girl was repeatedly mistreated, to put it mildly.

Grady is a good dude. People on his staff should be fired and prosecuted. The adoptive father should be castrated.

That call should never had been made at the sheriff's office. Everything should have been forwarded to the sex crimes division at the State Attorney's Office for their consideration. I'd be pissed if I was Brian Haas.

We should have a template to use for whenever an authoritarian figure beloved by Trumpies is accused of doing something wrong.

Insert alleged misconduct or misdeed here, along with facts and evidence.

    Trump supporters: "Dindu nuffin!"*

    * If the evidence is compelling enough, insert acceptance of culpability of authoritarian's underling here.
