‘Bitter medicine’: Why some EU officials quietly yearn for Trump – POLITICO

Very interesting article and runs contrary to what Biden and Harris have been saying about EU leaders. It was noted that Trump's approach to the EU "freeloading" on the US spurred additional defense spending by NATO members after Trump's 2016 election.

Did the anonymous people quoted not realize he was president for 4 years and none of that "bitter medicine" was administered?

The psychosis of not remembering this cat already flopped not even four years ago is amazing.

On these very boards these last four years Trumpers rushed to scold about even mentioning him although it was clear he was the nominee AGAIN.

Immediate pivot to Brand New Guy!

Who doesn't love magic bullets over hard work in solving difficult problems? But I guess people forget magic isn't actually real. The idea that the Euros wont bicker even more over who's not doing enough defense spending and pulling their weight if the US bails on being the world's biggest arms dealer and defense spender (another laughable proposition) is really pie in the sky stuff.

….a key point below from the article. let’s hope their hoping trump wins, isn’t throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Like with Brexit, it could leave things worse off. Trump’s actions might be so extreme it forces a stronger response, yet he continues to befriend and appease dictators like Putin, Orban, and Kim. In the long run, his approach of strengthening these leaders and failing to stand up to them could be detrimental to the world. And that’s not even considered his trade policies. That will harm all democracies.

“A Trump presidency would be so hostile to Europe, the thinking goes, that the bloc would have no choice but to bolster its defense spending, beef up its tech sector and clarify its China policy, they added. Still, officials say they have painful memories of Trump’s first term when he berated leaders, called Brussels a “hellhole,” and unleashed a trade war on the bloc.”

Maga taking on china will be interesting. IF trump broadly increases tariffs on china, they will retaliate. As in 2018 their tariffs will be targeted to cause political blowback for him.

Can you point out by links to legitimate sources that actually show that Trump’s bullshit resulted in an increase in spending by NATO members who had already committed to additional spending?

But who didn’t love it when Trump shoved the prime minister of Montenegro out of the way to get in front of him at a meeting in Europe? That’s leadership.

It sounds like that war in Ukraine is draining financial resources in several countries in Europe, and they're tired of it.

It also sounds like China needs rounds two and three of our NEW and improved Trade Deals with them.

But maybe some of their fears might be coming from all the crap that Biden and the deep state are ramming down the European's throats.

Who is "rewarding" these countries with cash to take in these Muslim refugees?

Why is that even a thing? How much of that is part of the Biden administration?

Europe always seems to be an economically distressed continent... I wonder why? I have an idea, why.

Sounds more like a three month takeover is in year three and Russia needs North Korean kill fodder and Trump to let them expand until Rooty Poo steps into a bullet.

Here is an article I found in about 30 seconds that shows Nato spending by European and Canadian members went from 262 Billion in 2016 to 314 billion in 2020, I think that is about a 20% increase over those four years.

Something happened in February-March of 2014 that caused Europe to start spending more. Europe decreased funding in 2014 but due to Russia’s invasion of Crimea that year they started increasing spending in 2015 and have done so every year since with the largest jump occurring in 2023 the year after Russia yet again invaded Ukraine.
