In before "we shouldn't be letting Canadians vote in our election to begin with." Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
You majored in history and you believe this? Trying to stop people from voting or votes being counted is extremely American unfortunately. This country has a long anti-democratic tradition, certainly richer than its democratic tradition.
Burning a ballot box in the state of Washington is like taking a pickaxe to Mt Rainier. What's the point? Terrorism?
From what I read its in a district with a close House race. It wont affect the presidency in WA or Oregon. But those states have lots of far-right types that are very active and violent.
Said above: “But those states have lots of far-right types that are very active and violent.” What’s the definition of “lots”? and “Very active”? This post smacks of an extreme broad brush.
Eastern Washington and rural Oregon have long been home to some of the most active far-right Nazi / white nationalist types. This came to mind immediately: Spokane bombing attempt - Wikipedia
That's not really a "broad brush", per se. He didn't say all "far right types" are active and violent. Perhaps ask him to quantify and qualify?
My father in law took a road trip around the US a few years ago, and one of the stories he told was stopping at a diner in Oregon, and making small talk with a waitress … “beautiful part of the country, here”… waitress: “it was better before all the n-words moved here”….. Even for someone who grew up in “the south”, it’s hard to imagine that being ok at a workplace …
Idaho is Nazi/Aryan nation headquarters. Geographically it makes sense, the eastern part of those states are quite rural and bordering Idaho. Pretty active secession movements out there too. Not sure if they have more numbers out there or what, but they definitely seem to sow a lot of chaos in Portland especially.
Yes I believe this, particularly as a history major. But I know where this convo will go and isn’t the point of this thread. I am sure we can both agree that it’s awful and shouldn’t happen, we can disagree on how to define anti-American behavior. Hope they catch the people responsible.
Yeah, all those areas are so isolated, I remember watching that rajneesh cult documentary where they basically just took over a small town in rural Oregon. If you want to be left alone, those are usually the places you go.
Not surprising to hear that in the rural areas when you consider Oregon was founded as a white only state. The state remains 87% white even with significant immigration from our southern border. Much of that “diversity” hasn’t reached the rural areas. “In 1844, when Oregon was still a territory, it passed its first Black exclusionary law. It banned slavery, but it also prohibited Black people from living in the territory for more than three years. If a Black person broke this law, the consequence was 39 lashes, every six months, until they left. The territory passed another Black exclusion law five years later, in 1849. This one barred Black people who were not already in the area from entering or residing in Oregon territory. The final exclusion measure made it into the Oregon Constitution as a clause when the territory became a state 10 years later in 1859. This clause went further than the territory’s second law by also prohibiting Black people from owning property and making contracts.” A racist history shows why Oregon is still so white - OPB
Ok, this stuff seems more like the norm than the exception in American "democracy." We just happen to have lived in a brief-ish time where that was less true. That's not to say it should be written off.
