What's the difference between a Twitter post and a link to a news story? I don't see a distinction.

I’m with you here. For the same reason.

Too much BS on X and other social “media”.

Find a link showing it to be true, post the link and then if you want, post the X post. Sometimes there is useful video not available from other sources.

This, to my lights, is a legitimate debate. However, neither of the extremes (all twitter vs no twitter threads allowed) seems to carry catastrophic risk. (1) All twitter threads allowed means that the first page could get littered with garbage, but the BS threads will eventually whither on the vine. Meanwhile, (2) no twitter threads allows could indeed censor certain topics, but if they are legitimate, they will likely find their way to a news source eventually.

Personally, I am a free speech freak, but this applies to the entire information ecosystem, rather than a single media entity, such as GC. So, I would probably go with no twitter threads, but of course allow posters to chime into any established thread with twitter posts. Though again, I don’t think either extreme would wander into draconian territory, so I’m not particularly adamant about this preference.

This is an interesting question. I would extend the inquiry by asking what is the difference between a Twitter post and a GC post? If news story = twitter post, and twitter post = GC post, then there is no rationale to bar any poster from starting a thread with any claim that pops into their mind.

The discussion on this thread is the resulting fallout from a thread started on Twitter / X insinuating / accusing Walz of pedophilia. It was posted on X with no evidence to establish its veracity and later that day the Twitter/ X posts making the unsubstantiated charges were deleted on that site.

When it was open, before X deleted the posts, I asked if the GC post repeating the unsubstantiated accusations and unproven rumors should remain.

"Leaving this thread on Too Hot would be as irresponsible and damaging as the Springfield Haitians eating pets story later deleted from Facebook by the apologetic person who posted the story. I'd hate for the forum to in any way contribute or be responsible in spreading a possibly / likely false and devastating rumor. That's not who we should be. It will be discussed."

Then I locked the thread. It was later deleted from Too Hot.

Why am I not surprised you and @rivergator are leading the charge on this? Allow adults to use discernment. Notice how I was absent from that particular thread. You are using this to justify cutting off X. In a scenario like the one mentioned, why not delete the post and be done with it? Perhaps a kind pm to let the poster know why (the first time). I get posts deleted left and right on the football board all the time for pointing out the overwhelmingly obvious. It doesn't hurt my feelings and it takes 2 seconds for you all to do it. Just delete a post like that and move on. No need to use it as a springboard to censor X.

Would it be so hard to wait until another news outlet picked up the story before posting it?

It’s not like there is some prize for posting it first on THFSG.

Brother, this is what censorship looks like. It starts with banning bits and pieces of the entity they want to shut out. Using a one-off as their rationale. Straight out of the Hitler/Stalin playbook. I'm with you on the credibility of source, but I'm not the one who made the post and I didn't participate in the thread for the very reason you stated, among others. We are all very capable of using reader discernment regarding the authenticity and viability of a story. By singling out X, they just happen to be singling out one of if not the largest right-wing social media enterprises.

It's disingenuous to suggest we have a 1/100th of the reach here that X had with that post. So as X did, delete it and move on. This has nothing to do with that post. They're just using it as an excuse to make it harder to transfer news from X to THFSG.

You couldn't be more wrong. This website should not be giving any more air to some of these false tweets, especially ones that could lead to dangerous situations for people. Keep in mind, you are on the free, not the pay, side of the board. You don't know who is reading this trash and where they are taking it. One serial offender started a thread with a tweet identifying a person by name who supposedly yelled at a child about Trump. Can you possibly believe there aren't Trump supporters right now trying to find out where that woman lives to pay her a "little visit"? I would not be even a little surprised if she has had to temporarily move out of her house and has some police protection. Problem is it likely wasn't the named woman who was in the video. Laugh all you want, but Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss understand all too well what it is like to be the target of the violent segment of these people.

It doesn't stop them from posting all the lies about Trump or false comments, now that's irresponsible. If you ask for examples that would be funny.

Why? That makes no sense. Those on the left hate every site we post from and no matter what it's trash to those pathetic libbies and the few who openly lie and call themselves republicans. They're a very sad group

I get what you're saying but look at the so-called fact checking that was done at the Trump and Harris debate they on lied on purpose about the crime numbers to make Trump look bad, then low and behold the FBI a few days later adjusted the numbers correctly and Trump was right. But it was too late, they achieved exactly what was intended. This happens all the time with all the major news outlets. Look at what 60 minutes did for Harris, I didn't see any of you upset about that.
So, based on your view TH is just like every form of news as is Twitter and our Mods (not meant as criticism) basically are now the fact checkers

I think most of us are mature enough to realize material from social media is of questionable value. It seems harmless to put it out there. People can move on or discuss it if they wish.

I'll get back to this, but I do appreciate those of you who actually discussed the question and avoided the sniping that can dominate here.
I asked because I was honestly curious. There's a lot of good stuff.
    thanks

Indeed, fl, we must admit that many media outlets exhibit a bias, and we cannot allow only a single vein of bias. Since twitter includes all kinds of voices, I wouldn’t view a blanket twitter ban as an attack on any particular perspective. On the other side, media comes with all kinds of perspectives too, so even if twitter is off limits, threads linking articles from WSJ, Fox News, and National Review would all still be welcome. If a story doesn’t qualify to be reported in any such outlet, we probably aren’t missing much.

Tweets are fine to start threads. They are easier to find and you don't have to dig through 10 paywalled media sites of various credibility to find the same thing if you can even nail down the proper search criteria to get to it.
