It's exactly the same. He slipped through the cracks just like everyone else. The US can't keep track of all the people who overstay their visas. If they did, people wouldn't be able to overstay their visa.

And apparently he's been a former illegal immigrant the whole time.

And now he's a hypocrite also.

Wait, so should he be allowed to violate the terms of his visa or not? If he violates his visa, should he be allowed to benefit from that lie by later obtaining visas and citizenship on false information?

Let me walk you through this. If you come to the US on a STUDENT visa, you are (gasp) expected to go to school. If you drop out of school or never enroll, you are no longer a student and, if you remain in the US, you have outstayed your visa. At that point, you are no longer in the US legally and your continuing unlawful presence renders you an illegal.

I don't know how well applicants for student visas are vetted although I can assure you that there are millions of "immigrants" who came to the US on tourist visas and have decided to stay. It's estimated that 40% of the undocumented immigrants in the US originally entered the US on temporary visas (student, work or tourist) and decided to stay after their visas expired. There are probably thousands if not tens of thousands of wealthy Venezuelans residing in South Florida who originally entered the US on tourist visas and decided to stay yet Trump isn't the least bit concerned about them while he loves to demonize working class Venezuelans who entered at the Southern border. If fact, Venezuelans who entered at the Southern border and have pending applications for asylum have legal status while the visa overstays do not.

    https://cis.org/Report/Latest-DHS-Report-Overstays-2020-Brings-Mixed-News

    Key findings:

    • DHS counted 684,500 overstays in 2020, up very slightly (about 1 percent) from 2019, when 676,400 overstays were counted, and just below the levels in 2016 and 2017.
    • Approximately 100,000 of people who overstayed had subsequently departed the United States by the end of the 2020 calendar year, leaving about 567,000 remaining in the country as overstays.
    • The most problematic category of visitors for generating overstays is short-term visitors who enter on the standard “B” visa. More than half of all overstays are in this category (353,000 overstays out of 684,500), and these visitors have one of the worst compliance rates of the broad categories identified in the report.
    • Student visa compliance improved considerably in 2020. There were nearly 49,000 student visa overstays in 2020, a drop of 39 percent since 2016. The student visa overstay rate declined by 50 percent between 2016 and 2020.

US Undocumented Population Continued to Fall from 2016 to 2017, and Visa Overstays Significantly Exceeded Illegal Crossings for the Seventh Consecutive Year - The Center for Migration Studies of New York (CMS)

Since more than one half of all US undocumented residents arrive by air, visa-issuing posts have become the real frontline deterrent to undocumented migration. This report suggests that more attention and resources should be given to that crucial mission of the US Department of State. The sudden increase in the undocumented population (that is, overstays) from Venezuela after 2013 illustrates this point. In addition, Congress and the administration should pursue legislation to legalize populations like the DREAM-Act eligible, long-term beneficiaries of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and “intending immigrants” with a recognized relationship with a US citizen or lawful permanent resident that would qualify them for a family-based visa (Kerwin, Alulema, and Nicholson 2018).

The disparity between current public discourse and the empirical data presented here obscures the fact that tremendous progress has been made in reducing undocumented immigration since 2000. It is time to build on that success by constructing an immigration reform package that upholds the rule of law while embracing the values that have truly made America great.

    “You people” that’s funny.

    Please explain what that means.

I doubt this was some big secret, and it was likely addressed long ago. Yet now that Musk has gone right at the left he is hated.

It’s funny how he was revered until recently.
People loved their Teslas so much and now are selling them because Musk is supporting Trump, just as ridiculous as the boycott Target or boycott Chick-fil-a.

I’ll bet if he was all in for Harris you’d be defending him.

That’s the hypocrisy I’m calling out.

Both sides have their sheep, question is are you saying Bah now or have you always hated Musk?

Hilarious. @gatorpa is apparently unfamiliar with the concept that........buckle up, cuz this is totally cRaZy(!!).......the opinion people have of someone else very well may change as that someone else does....new or different things.

    Totally wild, I know.

But here was Gatorpa after OJ was accused and very apparently guilty of committing a double homicide :

"Sure you hate him now that he's cut two people's heads off with a knife.....but did you ALWAYS hate him?! You used to like him! You hypocrite!!"

As a car enthusiast and environmentalist, I started off having and still have some respect for what Musk was doing with electric cars. I lost some of that respect with his complete inability to ever meet any announced time frame. I lost more respect when I saw the very disappointing lack of quality control of his otherwise very well engineered cars.. I watch volumes of automotive YouTube videos and became very disillusioned with the way Tesla was treating many of its customers including disabling lifetime free supercharging, charging people for features that weren't active yet and refusing refunds, disabling cars altogether, his poor spare parts network, among others. More than slightly disturbing was how the Tesla fanboys started viciously attacking anyone who criticized Musk, his company or his cars...almost cult like. MAGA, anyone?

I started to become angry with him when he had the opportunity to do some things to help Ukraine, but in refusing almost seems sympathetic to Putin.

The way he has run things on Twitter/X is enough for me to dislike him all by itself.

After announcing in March he wasn't going to endorse a candidate for president, he now strongly vocally and financially supports a rapist, thief and serial liar. I am done with him and his products. I come from a family where morals and character meant something important. He can go bankrupt tomorrow for all I care.

I was recently replacing an aging hybrid vehicle and strongly considered getting an EV. Tesla wasn't on my RADAR due to their spotty quality control and Tesla's business practices. Toyota/Lexus aren't there yet with their EVs, so I bought a domestic plug in hybrid for now.

As far as "you people," you know what and who they are.

The thing YOU obviously don't get is that my values haven't changed, they're pretty damn consistent. Either Musk initially hid things well or he has changed into something fairly repulsive as time has passed.

There is absolutely nothing hypocritical about reassessing people and situations. One of my very best friends at the time murdered someone in cold blood and is serving multiple consecutive life sentences to ensure they will never be released from prison. Is it hypocritical that I completely washed my hands of that person?

As I like to say, Musk has all of the crazy of Howard Hughes with none of his class and charm.

    Fair enough response.
    TY

I’m not really heard too much negative about teslas. I know 5-6 people who have them and have never had a complaint.

As far as Musk and Ukraine didn’t he deliver starlink early on? As I recall it was extremely helpful for Ukraine in coordination of defense vs Russia.

I guess he changed his mind about support Trump when Harris became the choice. Makes ya go hrmm.

He reminds me of HH as well. Plenty didn’t find HH super charming either.

Yeah, sure, tell yourself that. If you want to believe more Trumpy lies. Hates Harris, OK with Biden? Laughable.

We can't know others' feelings, but we can sure use evidence to make a good inference. Particularly when the evidence is right in front of our face.

The only real question is how much the convicted felon Trump promised to Musk in a quid pro quo. Probably multiple 10s of billions in government contracts. Trump doesn't care, it's not his money now, just like it wasn't when he started running up the deficit.

There is a pattern to his behavior by now.

President with anchor baby wife. Key advocate an illegal immigrant. Every accusation is a confession. We have to be living in a simulation.

Funny to see immigration central planning advocates suddenly discover the harm of central planning and responding by backward inducing a reason why their preferred policy shouldn't be applied here.

Elon previously supported Democrats but I don’t think he was over the top political like he is now. The things that seem to have radicalized him.

    -His son/daughter transitioning
-He got beat up badly by Twitter liberals and Ukraine supporters, especially after his Ukraine proposal to have elections in east ukraine to determine who should occupy it.
