The mods are currently discussing what guidelines we should have, if any, about starting threads with a tweet or a post on some other social media. Years ago, they prohibited starting threads with an email or Facebook post because those could be anyone saying anything, regardless of whether it's true.
Obviously, everything on other media sites, whether established or new media, isn't guaranteed to be right.
And while lots of real news comes thru Twitter, you also get a lot of "Trump/Harris did this really awful thing ..." that can come from anyone with an account.
Anyway, I was curious what the posters here think. Pros and cons?
And please, let's try to have a real conversation about it and not start throwing darts at the other side.
    thanks

It’s clear that both sides on this forum have “those” posters who look for anything and everything to throw up against the wall. However it wasn’t long ago I asked a mod why certain things were allowed to stand and the answer was(in general) so that people could see what kind of person the OP was.
At this point… if someone isn’t aware or isn’t smart enough to take anything posted on x as possible falsehood.. and if anyone isn’t smart enough to know who the posters on both sides of the aisle are.. there isn’t much point protecting them.
Do mods REALLY want to start curating what’s and isn’t allowed from this site or that site? I doubt it.

How else will MAGAts find anything at all to support their laughable assertions, such as that Muslims now support Trump? Or that Harris supporters are violent.

Inalso saw the post this morning that likely prompted this thread ( straw that broke the camels back is my guess)
And I immediately assumed it was garbage given the OP and the topic and the subject … but really what harm did it do? Even if people completely believed that the Harris. campaign is in complete disarray and her circle things she is a complete moron? So what? It won’t change anything. It doesn’t hurt anyone.
I’d point out that there are a lot of untruths and inaccuracies posted daily by both sides on this form. So what. This isn’t a public info service. It’s a message board. If this is where you get your news.. you deserve what you get.( same with Facebook/X/YouTube/ etc…)

Most of it is junk IMO. I don’t mind the occasional twitter link as a thread starter but so much of it is crap and we have some posters who traffic in too much of that crap for the good of the board. Not sure how you would make a rule that bars twit spamming of the board while letting the valuable stuff through. I guess barring starting threads with twitter links but allowing them on existing threads is better than nothing.

I have not problem with folks curating tweets here. I find twitter to be a goldmine of breaking news. A couple of thoughts, tho:

    a. The OP should be prepared to defend the veracity of a news tweet.
    b. The OP should take a position supporting or condemning an opinion tweet.
    b. We add a 'yawn' emoticon to rebuke our partisan trolls

Nearly all threads are based on information from outside sources. If you imposed the policy, we'd probably get the same threads but without attribution. At least providing a source gives people something to follow up on.

I do like seeing a little thought added to the initial thread rather than just a link or a repeat of the source material (though I'm sure I've failed at this). That might cut down on the drivebys.

No issue with starting a thread with a twitter post (or truth social) but the OP should provide some comment on it rather than just post a tweet. That's asking to posting a link to an article with no commentary/opinion given.

I say no Twitter posts to start a thread. If the tweet is valid, there will be other confirmation links and those links can be used to start the thread instead. As is we have one particular poster who is spamming the board with garbage propaganda from twitter/X posts.

Twitter has gone to absolute shit with Musk in charge. I fully support not allowing threads based on Tweets.

I agree, a Twitter topic could be a topic of discussion.

Although there’s always a few that basically just spam that trash all day. The issue isn’t so much starting threads as it is spam/trolling. IMO.

I vote no. We’ve seen THFSG posts claiming a key canidate was a pedo. based on a x post, which was false. And promoted by a Russian propaganda group.

other countries are posting lies on X to further divide us. Why help them?

“Russia has helped amplify and spread false and misleading internet claims about recent hurricanes in the United States and the federal government’s response, part of a wider effort by the Kremlin to manipulate America’s political discourse before the presidential election, new research shows.”

To drive Americans apart, Russia helped spread hurricane disinformation

“Russia manufactured and spread a fake video that purports to show someone destroying ballots marked for former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, U.S. officials said on Friday.

The phony video was quickly debunked by local election officials and the district attorney’s office in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. But it still circulated widely on social media, including Elon Musk's X, “

Maybe the post also requires a corresponding US news source that provides some confirmation. More confirmation than “as posted on X”

If Jack Posobiec isn't considered to be a reputable source, who or what is? He's a former naval intel officer. Very religious. Senior editor at Human Events. His Human Events Daily podcast was ranked #1 on Apple Podcasts according to a story I saw 2 or 3 years ago. Featured prominently at conservative conferences. On TV a lot. A 4 year history of breaking Biden White House stories with his amazing sources. 2.8M followers on X. Virtually every top conservative follows Poso. Scott Adams called him a "must follow." No X post from Poso has been debunked at Too Hot to my knowledge..

Is Poso hated by Dems? Yes, that's why scum (imo) websites like Media Matters attack him. As a betting man I'd say it's highly likely that rivergator went to Media Matters to find an excuse to lock the thread in question. And for the record, I've always said I like the job rivergator does here. In this instance I think he was wrong but the evidence on what Biden is saying will eventually come out. So lock the thread no big deal to me.

I appreciate the thorough vetting rivergator does. My preference is to post breaking stories and see if people here can confirm or debunk them. It's not like this place is the newspaper of record.

I oppose censorship. As RFK Jr said, when in history have the censors been the good guys? Hasn't worked out well at the old Twitter and Facebook. Or the MSM.
