Lol. She didn’t prosecute a single person under it, it was left to the counties to decide whether to use it or not. The purpose of the law was to give educators a tool to force parents into discussions on their kids, they were rarely prosecuted. I was going to post this ad a couple of hours ago but I wasn't sure it was real. Out of an abundance of caution, for which I'm known, I declined.
Because before she was AG which is what the first few cases in the video seem to be referencing (I didn’t watch the whole thing when I saw what it was), in SFO she had a similar law that helped on that issue (truancy fell 32 percent), and not one parent went to jail. If you want to fault her, it would be in that assuming county DAs around the state would have similar discretion and common sense on what it was designed for. Her guidance to the state was that criminalization should be a last resort, of course a kid with sickle cell anemia has a valid reason for example. But that was prosecuted in Orange County, which is one of the few conservative bastions in the state. So a conservative decides to prosecutes unjustly and a liberal is to blame? To be clear, I think the law had holes in it and she can take some of the heat for that. But it’s a far more nuanced issue than what was presented there. And was largely vetted among folks paying attention when she ran in 2020. There’s tons of reading on it for anyone that truly wants to know the history.
