So you accept photo IDs for airplanes and buses, but not for voting?

If people are content to go through life without a photo ID, then what makes you think they will bother to vote? If they won’t put out the effort to get an ID then why would they put out the effort to vote?

People only vote twice a year at the most. People need photo IDs just to navigate every day life in so many other ways.

 

The difference is a few fraudulent Repub votes in, say, The Villages don't kill a plane load of people.

Not at all. I think many people would totally accept airplanes and busses that were pre-registered, and had a signature check and database.

You may have noticed that practically nowhere that requires ID has that?

(Although there may be some issues with the immediacy of security wrt airplanes....if you can see the difference between that and voting? )

You’re making the assumption that those who don’t have IDs have faced barriers. I suspect it’s much more they just haven’t bothered. If voting is important to them, they will make the effort to get an ID.

I make no assumption. Studies have found financial limitations, lack of transportation, or complex bureaucratic hurdles are barriers and can reduce overall turnout by a couple of points.

I find the "if they want it bad enough they can figure it out" attitude quite callous.

People's ballots were stolen in Colorado, filled out and returned and the system caught it and it's getting corrected.

In Florida, you have to sign your outer envelope and the signature has to match your registration version. If the ballot is rejected, you can cure it in person at an election office.

Back up your claim with something substantial or quit saying it.

 

I would reword this to read “The only reason I can imagine not to require an ID is for voter fraud.” It is the same with some liberals believing that the only reason to oppose abortion is control women’s bodies.

The problem comes when we assume the limits of our imagination to be the limits of reality. At that point, we must assume those with alternative imaginations to be liars.

 

I have no idea where you shop... maybe strip clubs? But I have never in my life been asked for my ID in order to use my credit card.

Gun ownership is a fundamental right as well. We still do background checks. Free speech is a fundamental right as well. Yell "fire" in a movie theatre or "bomb" on an airplane and see how far your free speech gets you.

Fundamental rights doesn't mean there aren't conditions to those rights. Almost all rights are at least somewhat conditional. You have to pass a background check to get a firearm. Getting an ID (which in many states, if you are low income, can be free) is not an unrealistic hurdle to require for voting.

As for the airplane scenario, don't even get me started on that. Government intervention at its finest. The airlines didn't ask for that, the government forced them to have that security.

 

Not sure where you are voting. I'm the opposite. Every single time I've voted in Florida, the first thing they asked for was my ID, and I'm happy to provide it.

 

You apparently both like voter fraud, you just approach it from different sides.

How about 1 ID card, chipped, that you use for both ID and voter registration. Then move to some kind of modern, standardized system nationwide. This nonsense where states can't get their votes counted in time, with people driving ballots in from far-away counties and nonsense like that must end. Like, seriously people! It's 2024 not 1824.
