Spurrier proved that the ability to throw a deep pass early opens up all kinds of off. opportuntity

He’s one of the best of all time and I think he’s properly rated, very highly. Only people that don’t love him are people he used to stomp year after year. “quarterback and head coach, said, "If people like you too much, it's probably because they're beating you" - OBC

True today as it was then. That’s verbatim.

Look up Ben Bennett at Duke in the early 80s when he set the NCAA passing yardage record. Spurrier was the offensive coordinator and his offense was extensively in the shotgun. Feel better now. At least when I disagree with someone's post I try to show something to support what I'm saying. I don't just refute someone without anything that supports my conclusions then expect them to prove me wrong.

There is good reason for genius coaches like SOS and Walsh to not favor the shotgun. If your line doesn't contain the rush and allows a sack, now you're minus 5 - 10 yards instead of 2 - 4. It also might add that much more distance to every throw (3 to 4 yards) the QB makes if he isn't able to step up in the pocket. It's kind of like giving the defense a big head start on the play.
But it does help a QB with reading the defense, seeing the field and gives him more time to throw.

I don't think the shotgun would have changed the ass whipping unless maybe you gave Danny a real shotgun.

Could Napier's offense develop to become The Gas and Pound?

Truly, Mt. Rushmore of SEC coaches for not only winning, but for as you said the way he changed the SEC forever. Fun and Gun is the perfect sound bite for what he did. Guys running wild and wide-open with completely bewildered DCs. Took them almost a decade to start catching up with him. Just amazing what he did. Every bit as influential as the Bear and Saban.
Not sure who I would add as the 4th Mt. Rushmore but that is a discussion for the summertime.

“Wes Chandler was Percy Harvin before Percy Harvin was born.”

Why? The thread was about Spurrier's offense in general. This diversion over the shotgun wasn't what the thread was ever about.

When 24-14 brought up Spurrier's use of the shotgun I questioned that, but since then it has been a massive pile on. Geez.

Lol... yes, Wing, you are correct. It's just the haters from other schools have yet to catch-on about just how much SOS influenced the entire game of college football.

Gotcha . You know he was the villain but when he retired opposing fans said life in college football was more fun with Spurrier.
Don’t know if he is a Mt Rushmore but could be considered for sure.

Neyland. He spawned a whole generation of future coaches and his concepts dominated the SEC for decades. We just don't think about him much because it was so long ago.

He made it famous and most give the Gators credit for starting the trend. Then Urban came along with the spread option that most questioned whether or not it could work in the SEC and now almost everyone runs it. I wonder what offensive innovation will come out of UF next. No matter what it is, there will be a national title involved.

Utilized and made famous are two different concepts.
