I studied that period in Germany history when I lived there and attended the Universität Tübingen. There are of course differences, but the direction Trump and the MAGA cult - and it is every bit the cult National Socialism was - are pushing the country towards is there for all to see. But the MAGA cult is as convinced Trump is on the right path as the sociopath Hitler and his corrupt group of hoodlums were.

I have been consumed, my whole life, to better understand how one of the great cultured and accomplished cultural societies of Western Civilization could be transformed into a nation of lunatic militarists bent on racist domination of the world.

My library is rather full of volumes by American, English, Jewish and German authors on the subject.

I too studied the subject at UF, as a History major.

I would strongly recommend you read "Understanding Hitler" by Ron Rosenbaum, if you have not already done so. A book of competing interpretations on the how and why of Adolf Hitler and Nazi ideology. A stunning and powerful read, IMO.

I think what happened in Germany can best be understood by two factors: Germany's location in Europe and the Versailles Treaty after WWI.

 

Probably the nauseating use of the term 'patriots' doesn't help.

By definition, people who "love their country" are "patriots".
Quite why one side seems to own this term as if it's something political (when ostensibly the obsession is with nationalism, which is altogether different.) is beyond me.

If he wins it would almost certainly be a repeat of 2016 when he won in the Electoral College and lost the popular vote. I suspect that he will once again claim that he really won the popular vote but for massive election fraud and will once again regurgitate his patently false old favorites that it was attributable to massive voting by illegal aliens and dead people.

 

I would add: "The Great Depression".

 

Trump is literally Hitler and if he’s elected he’ll destroy democracy and all power will be subsumed under him.

So they’ll probably arrest him and throw him in jail.
