that the ability to throw a deep pass early opens up all kinds of offensive opportunities, especially for the running game. SOS used to gas the opponents secondary in the first half and pound them in the second half. With all due respect to Mertz, his inability to throw the deep ball hampered our running game.

When was the last time we scored 40+ points when the offense threw the ball only 15 times?

Yep, he was the first coach to pass first to open up the running game in a huge way. He really did change the entire SEC and the entire college football world.

He deserves far more credit for what he did, not only for the Gators' football program, but for college football.

His teams mastered the slant and quick-slant pass play.

Yep, and Danny Wuerffel was king of that pass play.

    In my head--- UF
    Did DJ some plays?

it was inexplicable at the end of the first half where coach sat on the ball and then took a chance that the quarterback would get hurt on a meaningless play

in the meantime, Kentucky is calling timeout to try to get the ball i- 20 seconds to go for a chance at some type of

Again so disappointing to not have two minute offense ready, especially when Kentucky was getting the ball back the second half

if you were, there was the crowd viewing?

It could be 3rd and 17 on our own 30, and he'd hit Hilliard on a fade at the 50.

I don't remember many teams using the shotgun until he started using it. Most of the time when it was used prior was kind of flea-flicker/trick play kind of thing.

In terms of historical significance to the game, Spurs easily would have a spot on the Mount Rushmore of college football.

I'm not sure about that. Spurrier went to the shotgun after FSU's defense knocked Danny around; prior to that, he wasn't interested. I believe a number of other teams were already using it.

I have to give Napier a pass here and I'm going to use one of SOS’s own quips. If Napier can't score at the opponent's 11 yard line with 1:11 left, he'll be unable to score with 1:30 left on our side of the 50.

Yeah, no I said I don't remember many teams using it prior to SOS doing it. Didn't say no one did, but even if they did use it, not many used it to the extent SOS did.

Yeah, no, I think with Napier's conservative thinking he was more concerned about giving KY something easy right before half.

You guys with the bacon emojis, give some examples of teams that used it extensively prior to Spurrier making it part of his offensive repertoire.

True and Kirby was doing the same before halftime vs Texas. Screaming at refs to put a few seconds back on the clock…..they end up getting a field goal there. It’s what winning coaches do.

I didn't put the pork belly on you, just posted above, but it would be a bit difficult to go back 30 plus years and research which teams used the shotgun "extensively" (whatever that means) before Spurrier, don't you think?

I'd say that putting a disagree bacon on a post would indicate they actually know better. So, all I asked for was something to support their beliefs. Otherwise, putting a disagree bacon is just being contrary.

At Dallas, not at Navy, and Tom Landry was the coach who decided to use it, not Roger.
