This isn’t that surprising at all, these aren’t necessarily “bad people” per se, they are just deranged by social media consumption. They may have even felt badly about their actions towards those relief workers which prompted them to “make good” by bringing their own donations. It is fortunate the situation was diffused and they didn’t harm anyone, technically there is a whole host of crimes they could’ve been charged with and if any guardsman were present they could have even gotten themselves killed if they were deemed a threat.

Problem is the next day they will probably go straight back to their social media addiction. Maybe a “real life” encounter is more of a wake up call than those who bounce from conspiracy to conspiracy online. But I think 1/6 showed that even an event like that was a wake up call for only a small number of folks involved.

I wonder if these people had the awareness to realize that they were being lied to?

Did they recognize that they were deplorably in thrall to an un-American total liar, whose lies were spread by a lying right wing "news" ecosystem, and were supported by a political party criminal organization that helped spread the lies?

Probably not. They're just good, but not necessarily critically thinking, people....and it's totally OK for major political figures to fill their heads with violent lies.
