Florida really needs to raise its sales tax and tourism associated taxes to pay into the coffers. Can only get worse. I suppose it is a dance on how much all the states can extract from Federal dollars.

Both sides grandstand. Not everything revolves around Trump for me even though I don't support the moron and wish he'd go away. Both sides grandstand on different issues and I never claimed anything about Trump being better or worse nor about solely this one issue.

Agreed. You pretending like there is ANY democratic candidate making shit up out of whole cloth like Donald Trump is doing about FEMA funding the border is truly pathetic.

There is no democratic equivalent for what we are seeing from the GOP.

Nah. There's far less "grandstanding" wrt current natural disasters. However, there is a whole lot of dangerous outright lying. And it's not done by both sides.

Oh also; the proper response to criticism of the leader of a national political organization lying and endangering US citizens is not : "my life doesn't revolve around that person." The proper response is "that person's vile, irresponsible and possibly criminal statements and actions should prevent them from receiving a single vote for anything."

Sorry, there's no "both sides-ing" that vile POS.

I'm old enough to remember when OJ Simpson cut two people's heads off with a Bowie knife.......and also how adamant I was to make sure people were aware that he wasn't the only person ever to cut someone's head off with a Bowie knife. And that people should please stop criticizing him for it, because everything didn't revolve around OJ Simpson.

State and local government is not here to support FEMA. FEMA is supposed to support state and local governments, mostly with cash assistance.

The federal government is far too large and highly inefficient. Agencies like the FDA do more harm than good.

Suppose the federal government or the Florida government had $5 Billion to improve infrastructure in Florida. Which would usually do the better job?

Sorry everything is black and white for you. Not worth arguing with simps like yourself. I wrote nothing inflammatory or anything remotely in defense of Trump or Maga but you guys can't help yourselves.

Once again you know nothing about how fema/NIMS works. North Carolinas governor had to say as much because of divisive rumors people like yourself believe and spread. FEMA does support responses and if you think local governments are equipped to handle these types of events alone then you have never been a part of one. Local agencies are overwhelmed by these events. Ask me how I know...

Jeezus you guys are absurd in your anger. I mentioned political grandstanding not specific to these disasters. If you think these lifetime politicians that disconnect from the common people don't pander and grandstand on various politics then I don't know what to tell you. This place is toxic as hell and if I use examples you will just turn it back to Trump so you guys carry on and live in ignorant elitist pompous bliss.

Both sides grandstand, there's no doubt about it. And if we're talking about DeSantis, there's no need for a "but Trump" change of course.
But grandstanding tends to be pretty harmless. Don't you think that DeSantis acting as though FEMA is the enemy is counterproductive?

It is funny to think we’ve coined the term Godwin’s law for references to Hitler in online discussions, but there is no equivalent term for references to Trump in online discussions despite the fact that the frequency of Trump references in online discussions dwarf the number of Hitler references.

This is a thread exploring the premise of dangerous outright lies told by the guy that uh.......you (seriously?) voted for. So when you try to shoehorn in that, well, all politicians are alike, it needs to be made perfectly clear that no, they are not. Some are vile, destructive liars who degrade our country by encouraging strife and division even especially in times of trouble.

No "both sides." This criminality and grotesquery is on one side only.

And calling people "elitist" won't change that either.

If you are referring to me then yes and my post stated as much. DeSantis was irresponsible and couldn't pass a moment to grandstand. The rest of my remark was in reference to the current state of political theater. Grandstanding and pandering has always been a political play but social media and 24 hr news has pumped the tactic with steroids. Again, my disdain for politicians beholden to special interests or pandering to an emotional contingent is in no way a comparison of "who is worst." Trump is a dirtbag and has harmed this country in a number of ways but I don't need to preface any and every thought with that statement to satisfy a few angry people.

I said FEMA is supposed to assist state and local gov't

Your trying to say I'm wrong because "FEMA does support responses"

No difference from what I said

My simple point is that FEMA is supposed to assist, not tell state, local gov't what to do. They don't have that authority. If you can show me that FEMA can take control from state and local officials during hurricane recovery efforts I'll change my opinion.

I'm saying that the governor of North Carolina as well as other republican politicians had to explain that fema was operating as expected which is to fund and assist with operations through the NIMS/ICS process in order to dispell all of the B.S. rumors about FEMA running amok and hindering the response. As such, DeSantis would have been better to acknowledge that and not feed into rumors in any way and leave out his disclaimer at the end. It was unnecessary and lent credence to false rumors by saying what didn't need to be said, that Florida is in charge....OK boss, he really told them!
