This tornado hit my niece’s home in Wellington. They’re all okay but they have to evacuate the house. Several homes in the neighborhood have severe damage.

It’s good for me that it’s staying south but bad for others. My heart goes out to everyone in the “cone”

Good for me too. I'm catching the northern side of the eyewall. The wind and gusts are really picking up.

Pulling a lot of dry air in over there. Hopefully it wraps into the center and helps degrade it faster.

It went through a message board buddy's backyard and took out several trees. They are OK though.

The wind is picking up speed, and I've already had the power flicker off for a split second... enough to cause my cable to re-boot. I expect the worst to hit from 10 to 3 or 4 in the morning... It's a good thing I forced myself to sleep earlier today, knowing that I need to stay vigilant all night long. Be safe, and prayers sent to all in the path of this killer storm.

    How so?

Other than the sort of similarish path projected through central FL a lot of the characteristics are the opposite.

Charley was an extremely compact and fast moving storm that tightened on its final approach to Punta Gorda area and didn’t bring much surge outside the immediate areas. This is another one, like some other more recent storms, that’s causing surge all the way down to Naples.

Fortunately that “wind sheer” effect the forecasters predicted came through and the storm veered slightly south and weakened quite a bit, so the loss of life shouldn’t be much. Hard to imagine what would happen if a 185mph storm rolled through just north of Tampa. A 120mph will still cause a lot of property damage, but it shouldn’t be total devastation and infrastructure loss like that worse case scenario storm.
