Disinformation is the greatest threat to this country currently.

There is only one party that runs and hides when people threaten to fact check them.

Trump packed the court with bought and paid for SCOTUS justices. Turnabout is fair play. We used to have 9 federal circuits, now we have 13. It's time to increase the total.

There you go. Democrats want to pack the Court. Meanwhile Democrats love to lie their asses off as well. Kamala and Tim love to say that Trump wants to ban abortions. Where is the fact checker on that? What about the School Shooters friend? His lies about his service.

How did Trump buy the Supreme Court justices?

Yet the Democrats want to in charge of the truth. I think liberalism is a mental illness.

Lol...you have you looked at the Supreme Court lately by any chance?

Does your definition of free speech include blatant lies and disinformation?

So because liberals don’t agree with the Supreme Court for its rulings on the Democrats assault on the constitution, they want to change the rules. They want to kill the filibuster too. Nothing is sacred with Democrats.

Meanwhile FEMA only has enough money to give $750 to hurricane victims. Yet, we have immigrants staying for free in hotels, and being paid handsomely to come into the country.

Free speech requires open dialog and all ideas. That includes false and stupid ideas. Where is this "truth arbiter" going to source its information? Sounds like the party wants a single source of information or propaganda without doing the hard work. Each individual needs to discover the truth for themselves, including representatives. Corporations (ie Media) are not a reliable source of information, nor is a funneled committee or person overseeing it.

Kerry is a moron, cant wait till the boomers are out of govt...

You people really crack me up, my God.

    Dems apparently want to:

    Eliminate the first amendment
    Eliminate the 2A
    Kill babies
    Eliminate religions
    Jail all opposition
Turn the US into a communist/socialist nation.
Take your ICE cars, stoves, ovens.

    All on Monday.

I read these posts and I think two things:

    Thank God for gated communities.
Thank God for automatic locking car doors.

Trump will sign a national abortion ban if handed to him. Especially if he's handed a big enough check to do so.

Leonard Leo, Opus Dei and the Federalist Society bought off the SCOTUS. Who paid off all of Kavanaugh's debt before his hearings? What did Trump say to Justice Kennedy to stop him in his tracks after his retirement ceremony? Kennedy whose son worked for Deutsche Bank, Trump's lender.

Do you even know what the 1st Amendment says? Have you ever read it? I know the OP doesn't and hasn't.

You are a classic right wing disinformation victim. You could stand for some fact checking.

Trump's SCOTUS justices said Roe was settled law when they were confirmed. They lied and then overturned it. The current filibuster rules have only been around since 1974. The Senate was created with majority vote.

$750 is what FEMA distributes for immediate needs after a disaster. Recipients can get thousands more when their applications are processed.

Ironically your response to my questions is to spew falsehoods and disinformation you have read.....basically proving the problem unintentionally

The problem with this theory (and social media in general) is that it isn’t truly a marketplace of ideas. Shock value is what gets clicks, and truth can be boring or not what people want to hear. The result is a system where bad actors get incentivized to peddle bad info. It’s a toxic brew of morons, bad domestic actors, and yes even foreign states and bots who try to emulate red blooded morons to help things go viral.

I don’t think the govt should be “truth arbiters” so to speak, but there should be a framework where the social media companies are required to moderate themselves. To knowingly sell bad info for $$$ is essentially fraud.

The problem is Social Media keeps coming up because its the "new" kid on the block, but there has never been a framework for the corporate media to fact check themselves. In fact, one could argue that the big 3, especially in the early days of radio and TV, was US govt propaganda. That doesnt mean what was spilled on the air is considered "facts".

The only thing you can do right now is open the flood gates for posts. Is there going to be foreign propaganda and persuasion? Sure, there already is... But whats the alternative? Anything else starts putting in things that in the long run is very dangerous.

And selling bad info for $ is the American dream, both parties have sold its population hell since they have existed. Look at any infomercial or the food pyramid, its all BS to make $. The politicians just make it sound "official."

Good grief, really? Does every conversation have to be littered with falsehoods like this? The $750 has been explained more than once here. You no longer have the excuse of ignorance. It has to be intentional.

No, he didn't say it's the enemy. He said it's the block that prevents us from eliminating misinformation. Do you disagree?

When chanting fear and despair is the only hope of overcoming a country that’s doing pretty good, you gotta go with it.

From those haphazard snippets, it’s really isn’t clear what Kerry is proposing here, but I agree that we absolutely don’t want government acting as the arbiter of truth. Of course, this threat also comes from the other side:

Trump signs executive order targeting Twitter after fact-checking row

Trump Says We ‘Gotta’ Restrict the First Amendment

    Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

There are people on both sides of things on this board with whom I would have no problem if they had some kind of role eliminating lies posted. And the greater world just provides a larger body from which to select such individuals.

Also, why do Trumpies always get mad if they get fact checked? Or if someone says that lying will be policed? Kinda weird.....
