Lost Dikembe Mutombo at 58 and Charlie Hustle 83 today. Wow. I always hoped Rose would get in the hall and bet he does now posthumously.

I think I meant post facto but keep getting corrected, so posthumously it is.

Rose was a great player with that tarnished rep. Posthumus HOF for sure.

I thought he was adamant he never bet against his team. Is there rumor to the contrary?

No. Banned players are banned from the HoF forever. Formally declared in 1992. See Shoeless Joe Jackson.

It seemed there was a lot of traction for him getting in for a good year or so and then, nope! Denied. Probably best but, he was sooo good. Every kid my age just loved him. Probably all the more reason to keep him out. Consequences.

He was a great player who went off the rails with his gambling. I saw him at the mall in Vegas about five years ago selling autographed baseballs for $75. There were two people in the store. He won't ever get into the HOF. My favorite quote of his when he was chasing Ty Cobb's lifetime hit record went something like this, "I'm just like any other guy... with 4,000 hits."

Let Charlie Hustle in the HOF! MLB should be ashamed of themselves for not letting him in years ago. Them offering their condolences on social media today is a joke.

“I don’t think betting is morally wrong. I don’t even think betting on baseball is morally wrong,” he wrote in “Play Hungry,” a memoir released in 2019. “There are legal ways, and there are illegal ways, and betting on baseball the way I did was against the rules of baseball.” He always said he never bet against his team. But, he seemed to leave it open to interpretation whether he bet on a game he played/coached in, which is against MLB rules.

Says who? MLB Rule 21: "(d) GAMBLING. (1) Any player, umpire, or Club or League official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform, shall be declared ineligible for one year. (2) Any player, umpire, or Club or League official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform, shall be declared permanently ineligible."

His passion for the game was unmatched. I’ll never forget that head first slide going into 3rd base. How many times did they show that? Aside from his gambling issues, he was one of the greatest.

He allowed what happened to be sealed and never discussed. He agreed to that for some reason. Hmmmmmm

So a group of people then?

What one group of people in 1991 can decree, another can undecree in 2025.

I thought Rose accepted the ban as part of the deal but I could be mistaken. If he did then you don't get to change the terms after the fact.
